Bruins Next Year with Horvat

Created by: BruinsWoahWoah
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 17, 2023
Published: Jan. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Friedman is predicting Horvat to Boston on a long-term deal - its an option this offseason if Krejci unlikely to return. Horvat takes a slight discount (using Kadri's deal as a comp.) to play in Boston and compete.

Cap only goes up $1.5M in the off-season. A lot of younger players like Frederic/Swayman take bridge deals to cash in a couple years down the road when the cap situation is better around the league. A lot of trades on the backend to free up cap space... would like to keep both Forbort and Grz but they're victims of the cap crunch.

Horvat isn't signing that low ball offer, Good luck getting Horvat any cheaper than $8,000,000 to $8,500,000 per long term on a 7-8 year deal.

And Friedman and Marek also said Patrick Kane to Detroit this summer. need to take them with a grain of salt.

Horvat, Pastrnak and Swayman, All get far more than what you're offering them.

    1. No he isn’t. You kinda ran with what he said and made it sound like something its not.
    2. Double swayman, frederic, and clifton’s contracts. Horvat gets more, Schenn gets more. So do grzelcyk and forbort in trade.

Horvat and Pastrnak both on the bruins next year isn’t a thing.

    Cap is going up 1m

    Horvat is not signing that.

Neither is Pasta, he would have signed already if he was willing to accept that.

No, no, no. When you're trading a cap dump, you pay. We have no use for Fobort and we have better things to do with that space.

Forbort isn't a cap dump - he is a key piece of the Bruins PK and is a great third pair D man. Bruins don't want to lose him but most likely inevitable with the cap situation. CBJ doesn't have much depth on the left side. Werenski and Bean are signed next year, but Forbort could help eat some minutes/lighten the load on Werenski coming back from a major injury.

We don't know how much the cap is going up... originally expected to be going up $2M and then Bettman said $1M projection but stipulated that could change. Given the cap situation around the league with so many teams right at the cap, I expect more than a $1M increase... its not good for the league to have the inflexibility. This projection accounts for a $1.5M cap increase... its not an outrageous projection.

We don't know what is going on with the Pasta negotiations. Most are speculating 8 years $11M, but I don't think its entirely implausible that its somewhere between $10.5-$11M if he takes less to get other guys paid too. We also don't know whats going to happen with Horvat - most of us would have thought Buffalo would get a bigger haul for Taylor Hall or that Kadri would have signed a bigger deal and not sat on the market all summer. I think the delay in the Kadri signing is indicative of the cap situation around the league right now.

Yes, Horvat has turned down 8 year deals with AAVs north of $8M from Vancouver... maybe he just won't re-sign there no matter what. A lot of guys don't want to play in Canada and he hasn't had a chance to compete for anything since coming in the league. I am not saying he agrees to that deal or ends up in Boston... I was trying to put together a somewhat plausible scenario that would get Horvat to Boston in the offseason. Maybe the opportunity to play in Boston, center Pasta, and a full NMC gets him to take a discount.

I didn't make it seem like it was anything... I merely repeated Friedman predicting Horvat to Boston on a long-term deal and tried to come up with a scenario where that was at least somewhat plausible.

Swayman - Probably gets a bit more... comps are Oettinger (similar player statistically, but much better prospect) at $4M AAV and Vejmelka at $2.75M AAV. Both Oettinger and Vejmelka are the undisputed starters on their teams whereas Swayman is 1B who has been inconsistent at times this year. He's been better recently and is the future in goal for this team, but I think a fair deal for Swayman would probably be a three-year bridge deal at $2.5M AAV.

Frederic - He has come a long way but I don't think he is a $3M AAV player yet. Still a young player and RFA, so Bruins have some leverage. I don't think the Bruins should go more than $2M AAV on him - this would also allow Frederic to hit UFA and cash in when he is 27 and the cap situation around the league is much better.

Clifton - Clifton has really improved this year, but this is his first year as a full-time player and on the bottom pairing too. He's been great in his role, I don't think he has the track record to be a $3M defenseman especially given the cap situation around the league. The only teams who really have money to spend Buffalo, Anaheim, and Arizona. The cap situation means that star players like Pasta are still going to get paid, but other guys most likely take what they can get. I think the market for Clifton's contract would be at $2 - $2.5M AAV - but in this scenario, the two-year deal gives him the opportunity to further solidify his place in the league and cash in again when he is 29 and the cap goes up dramatically.

Schenn - This is a pay raise for Schenn who is 34 years old next year... he hasn't made more than $1M since 2017-2018. This is right in his wheelhouse.

I actually wouldn't mind Forbort as a 1 year fill in if we lose Gavrikov, but yeah, Boston would have to pay us to take him.

He costs far too much for a bottom pairing guy, and we've got plenty of LD; what's lacking is experience. If Forbort was approaching free agency that would be a worthwhile argument, but he's leaving.
