Created by: Preston_Mattesich
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 19, 2023
Published: Jan. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The rest of the roster isn't contender level even with offensive improvements, but the sorokin vej goalie combo would be one of the greatest duos in recent memory and could get hot and take them to the finals. Isles fans are going to murder me for valuing varly below a vezina level goalie that could get two firsts in a potential trade lmao.
Trades
1.
NYI
  1. Boeser, Brock
Additional Details:
On a good team that knows how to use him, boeser probably plays up to or close to his contract. Isles get a steal (although no retention) as pressure mounts for GMJR to start blowing things up.
VAN
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (NYI)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NYI)
2.
ARI
  1. Pánik, Richard
  2. Varlamov, Semyon
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (NYI)
  4. 2024 1st round pick (NYI)
3.

WTF is that Arizona trade? Why would they want Varly and why would the Isles give up him plus a 1st for a backup goalie? If Varly goes it's going to be to a contender for pick/prospects not a bottom feeder like the Coyotes.

They also should be able get at least a 3rd, if not a 2nd, for Parise given that he's on a 20 goal pace at a league minimum cap hit.

Thats a good move for both VAN and NYI, i think playing with Barzal and getting out of Vancouver Boeser can find his game again and be that second line sniper that puts up 25-30 goals

-Personally don't think the Islanders as currently constructed should be sending out picks for veterans with high cap hits - as you said, the rest of the roster isn't contender-level and I don't think that adding Boeser is enough to drag them into the playoffs in the first place.

-Arizona says no; even if they don't, Varlamov and his 16-team NTC say no. You're basically giving them a more expensive rental goalie, a 1st next year, a 3rd, and a $250K obligation on top of that for an incredibly good goalie. Arizona might be taking the long way around a rebuild but Vejmelka is still young enough to be an important part of it - I don't see them moving him for anything short of an egregious overpay.

-Parise's third on the team in goals and makes the absolute league minimum. I could easily see him getting a 2nd or a 3rd & an interesting prospect at the deadline - dude plays all three phases of the game, and can slide up and down the lineup. Smart contenders love a Swiss army knife like him - he can do anything you ask him to.

Varly can block a trade to 1/2 of the league, Pretty sure Arizona is one of those 16 teams on his no trade list.

Good point on Vej trade but even though Parise's been good, I don't think his 40 game sample size as an expiring 38 y/o who was awful last year is enough to justify a high pick. Maybe by the deadline if he keeps up this pace I could see someone paying a third but if hes still playing well by then and the isles are pushing for playoffs it doesnt make sense to move him anyway.

I'm not saying you undervalued Varly, I'm saying there's zero chance the Coyotes would be interested in him as a rental and zero chance the Isles would waste their 2023 1st on a backup goalie which. If they're going to trade away another 1st rounder, they desperately need to use it on a scoring wing.

Coyotes take the deal because this is the best draft since 2015 and everyone is trying to get first rounders (meant to make it their 23 first not 24). Isles do it because in order to get boeser, they need cap. They dump varly and get vej who would be more of a 1B than a backup. All of a sudden the isles have the best goalie tandem since the knights had lehner and maf at the top of their game. They don't need to use the first on a winger because they already got boeser.
