The deadline move

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 27, 2023
Published: Jan. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Do this. Save the big stuff for Summer.

And maybe add a UFA veteran dman if we can fit (to preserve Nemec slide)
Trades
NJD
  1. Boeser, Brock ($2,650,001 retained)
Additional Details:
Buy a good product, that fulfills an unmet need, at low price.

The Athletic Canucks reporter said today “Given how difficult it’s been for teams to move wingers with cash on their deals (think back to how the Vegas Golden Knights simply gave away Max Pacioretty this summer to Carolina), the Canucks might have to pay a team to get rid of Boeser. They’d certainly be selling him for pennies on the dollar.”

If true, it presents a good buying opportunity for NJD if they can get that salary down a bit. His buyout is $2.2m, so maybe retention would be capped at that number. But still, at $4.4m x 2, it is worth the risk considering his strength, scoring in close, is our biggest need. And a change a scenery might do him some good.
VAN
  1. Walsh, Reilly
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Canucks choice of Walsh or McCarthy.

I think you guys will get Horvat or Mier. I mean if you have a legit shot at a cup this year why not go for it. Especially if you can re-sign them

Miller is already re-signed. And has had an off-year. And a bit older than our core. Horvat maybe as off-season move, but he would have to take less money as winger.

NJD is still developing. We’re playing the patient game.

Patches and Boeser are much different situation. Patches was aging and injured and may have Ben unlikely to play. Boeser is 25 and tho he has injury history he’s not in danger of never playing again. Plus Canucks don’t HAVE to move him.

I agree he’s probably going to fetch much less than he’s worth but I don’t think they’re going to have to pay to get rid of him like some suggest.

As for the trade I think that’s a bit much to retain for Boeser but I do like the trade.

The Canucks wouldn't want to retain that much. Retention would be less than 1M to move him, otherwise might as well wait until the offseason. Retaining 0.65M to get him down to an even 6M would be on the table.

I believe the writer was going for a bit of dramatic flare.

No reason I can't see him getting close to Viktor Arvidsson got (2nd and 3rd) if they got AAV into mid $4's.
Arvidsson was coming of 0.5 ppg season, he worst since his rookie year. Still had 3 x $4.25m left.
At the full $6.65m, probably just a single pick.

I meant Timo Mier. Not JT Miller. I think you guys have a legit shot at the cup this year though. I dont think your that far away
