Fan the flames towards the cup

Created by: evelutions2
Team: 2022-23 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 4, 2023
Published: Feb. 4, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I see the Canes making moves to address a couple of things. First off is the Patches replacement. Secondly is the 2C issue. And the third thing would be 3LD. I see the Canes in terms of a Patches replacement, going for someone that nobody was expecting. I’m pretty sure the Canes are going to make a rather big move soon, given that Patches just hit LTIR recently, so given the timing, the Canes might go deadline hunting early.

Not entirely sure on values, but thoughts on trade value are welcome.
Trades
1.
CAR
  1. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel
Additional Details:
This is only just the framework of this trade, but this would be a good move for both teams. The Isles clear up a C spot for Horvat and clear out cap, and the Canes add a middle 6 C who would be an excellent fit for the defensive system. This proposal would be for acquiring JGP without retention.

As it stands, the Isles aren’t in a great position in a couple of areas. As I touched on, they are overloaded at C with the Horvat addition, close to the cap, and aren’t in the greatest of spots for a chance at the playoffs (good but not great). JGP could return assets, whereas for Bailey an argument could be made that the Isles would have to pay to move. A move like this also helps clear up cap for Horvat assuming he wants to resign.
NYI
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (CAR)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
How far off on value is this and what needs to be changed?
2.
CAR
    JG Pageau
1000000-1500000 retained salary by the Isles or by 3rd team
    NYI
This proposal encompasses the possibility of the Isles eating some of his salary. Helps the Canes with more cap space for the next couple of off-seasons, hurts the Isles slightly, so extra piece(s) would be required.

How far off is this proposal and what needs to be changed?
      Carolina 2023 2nd round pick
      Philadelphia 2024 2nd round pick
C Ryan Suzuki: Former first round pick who has struggled with injuries but still has middle 6 potential
RW Robert Orr: 2021 5th round pick who has great offensive instincts and could end up developing into a decent middle 6 option if he gets given a chance at higher levels
      3.
      CAR
      1. Mantha, Anthony ($2,000,000 retained)
      2. 2023 4th round pick (WSH)
      3. 2025 2nd round pick (WSH)
      Additional Details:
Mantha seems to have fallen out of favor with the Caps, and with the Caps trying for what could be their final chance at the cup for a while, they will need cap space at swing for the fences. The Canes love their reclamation projects, and Mantha could end up finding his game with a change of scenery. With Patches now on LTIR, I am expecting the Canes to make a move soon, but a move that few people would expect would be this. I don’t see the Caps getting much for Mantha though, but I could see a team paying for the retention aspect.
      WSH
      1. Drury, Jack
      2. 2024 1st round pick (CAR)
      Additional Details:
How far off is this proposal? Mantha is a bit tricky considering I’ve heard quite a few fans saying he is more of a dump, while others have said he is still very worth a lot. As I currently see it, he is about a 50 point winger who has never hit his true potential. Under the right coach he could finally find his stride.
      4.
      CAR
      1. Kulikov, Dmitry ($1,125,000 retained)
      ANA
      1. Coghlan, Dylan
      2. 2023 3rd round pick (PHI)
      3. 2024 5th round pick (CAR)

Leave the fifth at home. We're happy with Coghlan and the third.

Yeah, I’m just not sure on how much they would cost to acquire.

I think Mantha could be a fit. He could proabably be had for cheaper though.

Trying to account for the extra cost of in division moves, and switch Mantha, I was somewhat using the Mrazek to Chicago as a basis, not sure it’s a good move comparable.

At this point Mantha and Pageau are 3rd liners. Not really sure how this improves the team?

As a Caps fan I'd hate to trade Mantha to Carolina because they would actually utilize him properly and he would absolutely tear it up BUT that's a good return for him. Tough call.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau will definitely cost a late 1st at least.

with no retention on mantha i would think you could have him for free, with retention and in division that price seems pretty much exactly right. mantha is a fine player but can be frustrating sometimes and doesn't really fit in with laviolette's system -- definitely a canes style pickup but if you are looking for a scorer to replace pacioretty he is definitely not that. that being said i think the caps are in no rush to move him now, and retaining for next year would be a big burden for a team that needs all the space it can get to keep competing.
