Leafs Run it Back Meier

Created by: ToqueLamoriello

Description
Obviously the trades need work. I’m happy to add more to either trade.
I would probably put Knies in for Niemela to increase the value/keep a D prospect in the system.
The galaxy brain idea behind the Garland trade is that the Canucks are planning on buying him out anyway. It saves the Canucks from paying 3 extra years of 1.8M while paying more in the short term. Probably would never happen.
I do think the leafs could find sign some cheap deals in free agency to round out the bottom of the roster, but won’t know who would be available until free agency.
It might take more to move Murray, but he was better and less injured than Mrazek last year. Added Blackwood assuming he doesn’t get tendered as an example of a guy they might take a flyer on.

Thoughts?

Canucks pass easily there is zero reason to gift the leafs a higher pick and a top 6 forward at almost 50% retained

Murray already blocked a trade to the Sabres when he was still with Ottawa, just before u guys got him
We also aren’t looking for a goalie anymore,
so i just don’t see any way at all that this trade (or anything like it) goes through

Canucks aren’t buying Garland out, that report referred to guys like Pearson or Myers

Fair enough. Doesn’t matter the team at all. I just picked buffalo because they could use an NHL goaltender.

Why is Buffalo doing the Leafs a huge favour?

Like I said, galaxy brain idea based on that report that didn’t seem to make sense to me, since I like the player. I would pay a lot more to make this trade in this scenario, but not top 6 winger with term and retention prices.

Buffalo is acquiring an NHL goalie for a year and upgrading a pick. Leafs could just as easily trade Samsonov’s rights to another team for fun and keep Murray for the year.

Disagree
Anderson has played well all season
And UPL just flat out wins games, and has also played quite well after an initial rough patch when called up (12-4-1 in last 17games)

Murray wouldn’t be an upgrade on what we currently have

The goal is to have a goalie who actually plays.

Guys, it’s one year, Craig Anderson is 41 years old, UPL has admittedly been below league average I will give you that, and another team will happily take Matt Murray with a pick. Sorry I picked Buffalo, I guess?

Guy, it's not the the Sabres or any other team's responsibility to improve the Leafs.

Well think you proved how silly impractical to resign Meier. Murray can't be traded (maybe bought out). Really cheaped out on Kampf. Really want Timmins and Kral as the 6th and 7th Dmen?
If Garland is so cheap to obtain, how is he a first and second line winger. Forget Meier and spread the cash around to strengthen the team overall. (and keep Niemela and the picks)

UPL is a rookie who has improved every game and just won rookie of the month
