Deadline Rumors

Created by: Jupa08
Team: 2022-23 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2023
Published: Feb. 21, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- This is based off of what has been reported by a couple reporters on Twitter.
- I don't understand the fixation on adding another LD especially one thats a UFA at the end of the year and is going to reportedly cost a 1st round pick. If the ask for schenn is less which I assume it is I would rather pursue that and add depth on the right side where we are weaker and Carlo has an injury history.
- Gryz has gotten a lot of hate lately and I understand hes struggled in the playoffs but I dont see Gavrikov as someone thats a 1st and a 3rd round pick better than Gryz. If they are giving up this for Gavrikov id rather them just go all in and add whatever pieces necessary to get Chychrun and solidify the top 4 for another 2-3 years.
- The team has less than 10 losses at the end of February, I understand wanting to add but I don't like the cost for a guy thats going to be a depth guy
- If he isnt a depth guy and they want to trade either Gryz or Forbort for a forward, Id just be nervous that Gavrikov wont fit as well as those to do. The team seems close and Id be nervous to break up something that has worked this well while also giving up a 1st and a 3rd.
- The defense right now is all over 6 ft except for Gryz and Clifton (who plays bigger than he is) I dont even think getting bigger on the back end is a huge concern. Also Schenn would accomplish the same goal at a lower price and is more physical than Gavrikov is as well

When you have the chance to get a Gavrikov you get a Gavrikov, that’s what my parents always told me

Why wouldn’t Columbus just take the smith contract back and get the deal done? Cap numbers and cash are almost the same. This whole thing makes zero sense

my thought is that they think they want a first and third for gavrikov and smith will cost to move.

teams dont take cap space without good incentives. i would not be shocked if teams (including cbj) are asking for a 2nd or a good prospect to take Smith,.

A second to move an expiring contract 3/4 through the year is insane. Why would Columbus risk the trade falling through and not getting anything.

They haven’t stopped fielding offers. I’d counter to BOS to not risk losing Gavrikov to another team.

Even if it’s only pro-rated, a $4.3M salary ain’t nothing. For CBJ, you’d be asking them to take on more money than what they were paying Gavvy, and all for a replacement level player at a position of little to no need for most of the league. Unless you’re talking about the TOR, NYR, MTLs of the league, teams don’t like to **** around with actual cash.

Bruins don’t have to move smith to do this. That’s not the hold up.

oh, its absolutely insane. however teams have leverage. they know boston cant make a deal without moving Smith, so why not drive a hard bargain?

There are other teams in on Gavrikov. Theyre willing to risk the trade falling through probably because we already have a stacked prospect pool and they know even if boston bails, they could still turn around and trade gavvy.

Actually Boston can make it work if Columbus retains 50%. If anyone else was offering a first why would Columbus wait around? It’s been a week with this rumor.

Still plenty of time left before TDL, but nothing wrong with a bird in the hand. There’s been enough smoke with Gavvy that I highly doubt CBJ won’t get a 1st from him somewhere.

BOS is the team with a 1st, a 3rd (and more?) on the table. If retention was all it took, CBJ can do that - there is something else holding this up, and its hard to say its something on CBJ’s end.

A rental for some picks is a basic trade. It’s not a huge contract. If Boston was really interested it would be done by now. I don’t see it being a thing anymore.

Basic for us hockey dweebs posting on internet forums with other hockey dweebs - can't account for the complexities of what a front office needs/wants out of these things, particularly with a high-leverage asset like a 1st. Not to mention if BOS wants to make other trades, even minor ones, outside of a Gavvy move.

Either way, we'll see how things unfold.
