Team candidates to trade Varly for a forward

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 22, 2023
Published: Feb. 22, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Varly was shipped out, looking scenarios where we add a forward with some control rather than a 1st round pick (or so) in value. NYI rides Sorokin until the wheels fall off and then have some juice added to the forward group
Trades
1.
NYI
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
Additional Details:
Outsiders prospective but it has felt like Mittelstadt has been on the cusp of a “change of scenery” trade for a while now. He isn’t exactly lighting it up this season either.
2.
NYI
  1. Tanev, Brandon ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Turbo is a pain into play against. I think there is a legit chance Clutterbuck LTIRetires this summer. Taney would be a similar replacement. He has less upside than a Mittelstadt for example hence some retention
SEA
    Varly extends here in SEA
    3.
    NYI
    1. Arvidsson, Viktor
    Additional Details:
I don’t know if Arvidsson is the perfect fit for this type of trade. I was between him or Kaliyev. But LA could use an improvement between the pipes
    LAK
      Varly also extends here too
      4.
      NYI
      1. Tatar, Tomas
      Additional Details:
Extends 2-3 years at a reasonable number?
      NJD

Wouldn't be Tatar, he's been excellent. You'd get futures or Graves/Severson

I would love Ryan Graves but I don't think he would be on the table. Devils would be crazy not to extend him. Severson probably won't be extended but I don't see why the Devils would move either right now IMO. I should have said Tatar would be under the assumption NJD got Meier making him more expendable.

Disagree on Graves. He should not be extended at the price he'll command. Tatar on the other hand I'd happily keep around if he'll take a discount even with a Meier addition.

You're not going to get a player like Arvidsson or Kaliyev for a rental goaltender, and LA won't sign another goaltender while Petersen's contract is still on the books.

LA is a good goalie away from being dangerous. I had Varly extending as part of the proposed trade

Understood, but LA won't extend a 3rd NHL goaltender, so unless the Islanders take back Petersen's contract, this doesn't work.

"LA could use an improvement between the pipes"

Varlamov has started 19 games and is 10-7-2 with a GAA of 2.82 in them on a team that has given up 166 goals.
Copley has started 24 games and is 17-4-1 with a GAA of 2.67 in them on a team that has given up 194 goals.

Explain to me where the improvement is, at the cost of a top-6 forward and a roster slot (because neither Quick nor Copley is waivers-exempt).

I'm all for moving mittelstadt out, but it's not gonna happen for a 4th goalie, that's a pending ufa.

Mitts points/60 is right in the range of guys like Lee, Kane (Pat), Dube, and Kadri. He's ahead of guys like Hall, Reinhart, Strome, Kreider and many others. His productions been pretty decent for a middle 6 forward. 34 points in 55 games is good production for playing 15.5 minutes a game.

Not opposed to trading Mittelstadt, but it's not worth trading him for a rental when you get decent production from him for a reasonable caphit.

Soon to be 35 year old pending ufa goalies never have this kind of value, it’s more a 2nd-3rd round pick territory at the most

Fluery is your most recent comp. NTC, 37 traded for a conditional 2nd rounder. Signed a 2 year extension after the season ended.
      In chicago he had .908 sv% and a 2.95gaa

Varly is turning 35, M-NTC 16 team no trade, 0.911 sv% and 2.82 gaa. I think a 2nd is the most realistic return for Varly
