That Penguins trade makes 0 sense. Why is Pittsburgh retaining salary and gifting away a prospect and a pick? Kapanen's not a negative value, just a neutral value.

Well the Canucks do have the cap space, they've 6.7M free with LTIR right now. More if OEL has to go on LTIR.

Something that could be interesting is Petry, and a prospect or pick for Garland and Schenn.

The issue with LTIR cap space when your not fighting for a playoff spot is if you use all of that to bring in players and dont move anyone out of cap value then next season once theyre back and healthy and we have to be cap compliant, first we either keep the guys then can't sign petey and anyone else next year or move guys for way below value or give up picks to move them which just screws us even more, the cap space we have right now should only be used to make a trade go through with someone coming back whos going to be a free agent and letting them walk (which vancouver did with toffoli and letting him go was a huge mistake) and to use the space to by free agency to create more cap space.

did they change it that quick? cuz right now I see Kapanen/Hallander/5th for Schenn 50% retained, which seems fair (if even a little light on the Vancouver return)

We cant take on petry at 6.25m for 3 more years at the age of 35, thats screwing vancouver even more it would be OEL/Myers all over again, it would require the peguins to give up a lot more for us to take on petry, especially with the return of garland and schenn

going by CF's front page, they have just over $2M in cap space next year with 15 F/5 D/2 G currently signed - so drop 2 of those forwards, bring up/sign 2 cheaper D, and you're fine. Using the LTIR to be able to retain on an expiring deal would work fine this year, as long as the retention was *only* for this season.

we have lots of LTIR space to take on contracts that expire this year. And mike reilly with 2 years left gives him a chance to come here, play good minutes, up his value to flip at deadline next year

no i think he thought it was a part of the boston deal, where Pit retained as a 3rd party for schenn

But we also don't want players thatll make us better this year specifically if we want that high draft pick, i dont like mike riley with our abudance of young talented wingers and established wingers, i dont see him being a good fit at all, the only way i see us taking on contracts that end this year is if its to make a significant trade go through i.e. Boeser, Garland, or Miller

I was thinking of riley smith my bad

and i'm yet to see anything out of vancouver reports that van are willing or even looking to be a 3rd party to retain, but management have said that their 1st priority is to fix the cap and retaining cap for a player we dont get doesnt help that.

its defiently out there and they would be stupid not to try and weaponize their current cap space, they were depirate to clear it when they still had harvat to sign and all these guys wernt on LTIR. weaponizing the cap and picking up assets helps this team for next year

Thing is thats the cycle that van has been in for the last damn near 10 years and has lead us to this situation, trying to use our cap to bring in players and assets and then they dont work, theyre contracts aren't great and we cant move them or have to for very little and we cant do that anymore, we need to get as much cap space as possible, gain as many picks and young players as possible and start from the ground up, we can't use our cap anymore cause it obviously hasn't been working, canucks have sucked at doing that so it needs to be a restart.

using your cap space to retain as a 3rd party bring you young players/assets. Mike reilly becomes a top 4 dman on this team and will 100% up is value by next trade dealine when we can sell him as a rental

If you believe the rumors, it hasn't been done because Boston is trying to move out Smith first in order to make cap space for Gavrikov.

Luke Schenn also "done pending other moves". canucks can take back cap i really do wonder if its somehow a 3-way trade taking a while to make happen.
