It’ll be okay. Soon.
This part isn’t supposed to be enjoyable.
The Blues strength is their depth, which is momentarily gone. Covid salary cap wrecked everybody, but this is kryptonite for the teams philosophy.
They’re being exposed right now as they don’t have an extreme high end to carry games. You’re seeing what happens when the depth is gone. The other team can shut down one line and abuse the rest of them. That demoralizes them.
That’s okay. It’s nearly the guaranteed outcome for a bit.
The Blues have an excellent scouting and development system, and the respect of free agents and other gms. While they aren’t as desirable as Tampa, Vegas, they’re doing much better than a whole lot of teams in these areas, especially considering Missouri sucks.
While all teams have holes, shortly the blues will have home grown center depth in Thomas, Bolduc, Alexandrov.
The primary reason for this seasons failure is the loss of (sometimes) 3 players from the same position, Scandella, Perunovich, Krug is the sometimes.
Leddy is not a top pairing, Rosen is an AHL talent, and Tucker is a 22 year old 7th round pick. It’s mission impossible to lose your entire depth at one position with a stagnant salary cap. It cascaded. You may want to pick and choose who to blame, but this is not the way.
The money does not exist to bolster the lineup, thanks to Covid, and no West conference team is going to help the Blues out.
As a result, the correct decision was made and (as of now) 4 players were jettisoned who were probably going to go anyway, except now the Blues have currency.
The depth will return. It’s a core philosophy of the organization, always has been. The currency exists to get it.
It is best that they suck the rest of the year. They will be better sooner and faster the worse they are right now. And you never know, a generational talent could land in their lap. Or Carlsson.
