Cap doesn't work for a pick only. I don't think we can rely on Blackwood in the playoffs anyway, so why not take a chance on a proven playoff performer in case anything were to happen with Vanecek before April.

The thinking on the Blue Jackets side is that Blackwood still has RFA expiry status, so they would still have a backup goalie/1B option behind Elvis for next year, with a decent upside.

Gives Quick an opportunity to go to a contender while basically making a lateral move for a goalie asset.

Insurance (risk) is a calculation of two variables...probability that an event occurs x cost of that event occurring.

It is mathematically impossible to have insurance cost more than the thing you are insuring.

The Jackets REALLY need Quick now.
Their tanking efforts are falling short lately (5-2-2) and Korpi had to go.
Elvis maybe is starting to figure it out, so having Quick stand in might be the best option to lose a few more games.
Columbus is famous for doing this, sucking right up to the trade deadline and then getting hot the last 8 weeks of the season to blow any chance of getting decent draft pick.
With Quick, we might be able to stem the tide a bit. But then again, I doubt Quick even reports to Columbus.
