Value-wise I would grab that trade but Ottawa can't afford Weegar next year.

Lindholm back to Carolina is unlikely after he mocked the surge. Plus, he's a very meh player and the Canes need a high-end game breaker. Without Tkachuk and Gaudreau, Lindholm has never been that

It would be the only way Montreal would take Huberdeau... and his salary

Not if it costs us Dach, RHP and 2 1sts. I like Huberdeau, he is a great player having a down year but at 29 he doesn't fit our projected window at all. Plus he is signed for too much for way too long
ricochetii and Burnout liked this.

There are only a handful of players worth $10M or more in the league and Huberdeau is not one of them.
That kind of contract should only be handed out to players worth it immediately after their ELC or players who take a short bridge deal before signing long term.
In almost every other case, you are giving too much money to a player into their mid-late 30's.
Occasionally signing a player to such a contract is a necessary evil, but it was normalized even pre-cap era and that standard has yet to adapt to the new realities.
You can't pay a player late into their career as a reward for previous service any more. Especially if that previous service was rendered to another team. They get the prime year benefits at a lower cap hit, and you play the role of sugar daddy to make up for the player being underpaid by his last team.

I'm not as high on Wahlstrom as most and wouldn't consider him untouchable anymore. I see him as a middle-6, 20g, PP specialist but would love to be proven wrong. However there is no way I'm trading him for a contract expiring 31 year old Tyler Toffoli
