Turcotte's draft position from 4 years ago and LA fans over-valuation of him aside, I don't think he is enough to pay for dumping Petersen, let alone sending Mitchell and a 5th round pick as well. He may have been a high draft pick and he may be from CHI, but he is in his third year as a pro in the AHL and is still struggling pretty heavily to produce. I think everyone is hanging onto upside that just isn't really there anymore.

Yeah I took a look at your post and thought it made alot of sense. Unless we trade Murphy, Mitchell seems to be the odd man out. Hasn't shown too much progression, maybe a change of scenery helps.

Turcotte and Mitchell have pretty much the same amount of value. That means it's basically a 5th round pick for 2 years of 5 million. The hawks would want more for taking Petersen

Kings fans generally don't overvalue Turcotte. Quite the contrary. We just don't believe LA is going to sell low on someone they spent such high draft capital on. If he had been playing this entire time and ended up where he is now, then sure maybe the Kings try to find him a new environment. But his slower development is directly related to injuries outside of anyone's control. Look no further than Gabe Vilardi to see that sometimes patience pays off when it comes to recovering from injuries.

And as far as the dumping of Cal Petersen, everyone outside of Kings only look at it for this year. Yes, he's a cap dump. Plain and simple. We agree on that. But I suggest looking at a buyout for NEXT summer. If the Kings stash him in the AHL again for one more year, the buyout for Cal becomes significantly reduced. Because the Kings aren't in a bad position with regards to the cap, there's absolutely no reason for them to spend valuable assets to dump him when they can resolve the issue in a year for cheap.

Sure. The debate here isn't whether they need to dump Petersen or not, though. The debate is on what it will cost if they do decide they need to dump his contract for whatever reason. And yes, I agree that cutting bait on such a high draft pick like Turcotte at this juncture is probably not the best decision. That is especially the case because he currently doesn't have the trade value to justify doing so. Then again, with all the centers they have on the NHL roster and in their pipeline, I could see them cutting bait with him sooner than fans might think. I could also see them wanting to get certain players locked up sooner than later or bringing in certain UFA's to bolster the roster over the summer, which might require larger cap hits and therefore dumping Petersen's contract to create the space.

Yeah, well, you should have traded Jake McCabe to us for our 2024 first (instead of Toronto's 2025) and our 2025 second (instead of Toronto's 2026) and kept Lafferty (or sold him somewhere else for value), so go $$$$ yourselves.

Seriously, though, my current hobbyhorse rant aside, I reiterate my friend @PuckLuck_77's distinction between overvaluing Turcotte and not wanting to sell him at his point of lowest value. Even IF we decided that we had to dump Petersen's contract, we have other assets that would be better spent on that move than giving up on Turcotte. Although I don't expect lightning to strike twice in the same spot, there's nothing to say that his 2023-2024 won't look like Gabe Vilardi's 2022-2023 (or maybe one season earlier), as PL intimates. To put it another way, if we give up a second to dump Cal, it takes the prospect eventually chosen with that pick surprising everyone by turning out to be better than expected for us to be wrong; if we use Turcotte for that purpose, it only takes him achieving his projected potential for us to look foolish.

haha. Honestly, I agree. But our GM purposely wanted to spread out picks, and I'm guessing LA didn't offer anything comparable or better. That or Davidson just likes Anderson and Gogolev a bunch for some reason. He could also be anticipating TOR not being very good that year and that 1st being pretty high. Who knows what he was really thinking or what other offers were available...

I think if a Petersen dump went down like this AND Turcotte were to hit his predicted potential with CHI, it would just look a lot more like a fair price to pay for the dump. I don't think LA would look like fools, especially getting Mitchell and a 5th back. I have this suspicion that CHI is gonna move on from Mitchell and he is gonna go somewhere else and look like a stud. When given ice time he looks great, yet they keep scratching him or not giving him consistent ice time. He's also currently buried behind Jones and Murphy in CHI's depth chart. They should at least send him down to play more minutes... But only CHI's front office and coaching staff really knows whats going on there.
