We don't need Kuznetsov as an aging center, and we are most likely on his 10 team NTC list.
There's no point to pick up Garland to play on 3rd line.
The Pitt trade is the worst of all of them.

You overpaid everyone that you signed.

About 20% high on Zegras and Terry.

We aren't adding for relieving Washington of roughly $2 million in cap this season and the entire second season of Kuznetsov's contract, which expires just as we'll be regaining relevance.

John Gibson is worth much more than an unhappy cap dump, a mediocre back-up goalie and an over-the-horizon first.

Pens decline, they can get a goalie who's been better over the past couple seasons just by resigning Jarry. They don't need to spend a first and a top 4 defenseman to do it either.

Apparently overpaid but still good = "unhappy cap dump" and one season with a SV% below a .912 makes a backup "mediocre".
For a goalie who hasn't had a SV% above .904 or a GSAx above -2 in 4 seasons .

Yeah Gibson is tough to figure out. His numbers have declined but Ana has declined at the same rate. On a better team...
The problem is that the Pens defense is also not great.

I think it you made the 1st into a pair of 3rds and Jarry isn't interested in a shorter and cost friendly contract, this would be a good backup plan for the Pens.

I have to agree with Haymaker, Petry is still (by all standards) a top 4 D. He is overpaid but only by 1-2MM. DeSmith is actually a great backup goalie but with Jarry's injuries he has been asked to start too much. The first is likely 18 - 24 so you're correct on that.

On the flipside, Gibson hasn't been elite since 2018. This season is is ranked 94th in GAA and 62nd in SV% but he is ranked 4th in cap hit. He is very close to a cap dump himself. But again, he is on a very poor team and maybe a change of scenery...

My characterization of "over-the-horizon" referred to the fact that it is for the draft three Junes away, not this year, when Pittsburgh's selection will probably be between #15 and #18. (The two Western Conference wild cards will be ## 19 and 20.)

Oh my bad. I missed the year for the pick. Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry man, I've been a Gibson defender for a bit, but I think he's cooked. Could playing for purpose give him a resurgence? Sure, but he's been playing below average hockey for so long now that he's more of a gamble at this point given he's got four more years at $6.4M. One has to wonder if ANA could have got anything of value for him at this point they would have. I'd rather pay Jarry.

As far as Petry is concerned, there seems to be this sentiment on this board that he's some bum who the Pens would have to pay to dump and that's honestly absurd. Yeah, dude had a shaky start until he started to finally get acclimated to a new team and system, and if not for injuries he'd be on pace for around 45 points; that's with playing on a 2nd pair and not being on the first PP unit. His underlying numbers are also very good.

I wouldn't move Petry and if the Pens did, while they wouldn't get some monster return, they'd get something of value.

As usual, we're pretty close if not on the same page.

I agree with you that whether Gibson can return to his old form behind a decent defense is an open question.

And I agree with you that my characterization of Petry as a cap dump was an overstatement. I was looking for a simple term to describe someone who I believe is overpaid and wants out of Pitsburgh (according to some reports, for family reasons). I hit on a poor description, perhaps influenced by the entirely normal adjustment period all transfers (including free agent signings) experience. My only defense is that I was annoyed by what I see as a poor offer for Gibson.

That's fair and I know how frustrating this board can make one feel with these offers lol. Someone yesterday had us auctioning the future for Josh Anderson again haha

Gibson is going to be an interesting case and I've gone back and forth in my mind about him. I'm surprised ANA hasn't moved him yet, but we obviously don't know the whole story behind it. We don't know if they've tried or if they're simply trying to respect him like they did with Getz and let him decide when or if he wants to move on.

Thanks for bringing me to my senses in the most courteous way possible. I know that I can be a hothead despite my age and therefore greatly appreciate respectful counterpoint.
