Why buy out Simek and Lindblom? If your plan isn’t to compete why not just play those guys and hope they play better and you can flip them at the deadline for assets. Or they don’t play well and their deals are done at the end of the year.

That is an option but they have so many other options at those positions and young guys that need nhl games.

In this case I'd prefer to just waive them and have them finish out their deal in the AHL without using the buyout or dealing with the (minor) cap hits for the following seasons. Same goes for Kunin. In fact, even more so for Kunin, but with him, Grier gave up a 3rd to acquire him so I wouldn't expect to see that at all just to save face.

Horrible value for the Sharks to take on an anchor with an extra year and retain $2M just to get back a 3rd.

If we get the 4th OA I would go Leo Carlsson or Will Smith. Michkov has elite talent but that KHL contract scares me and he is pretty slow skater for also only being 5’9” (he is not 5’10”) but I could be dead wrong
Levahunov is a RD I’ve been eyeing for almost a year.

A serviceable defenseman and a 3rd and they get like $3 mil in cap space for a pending ufa? Seems like a good deal for a cap strapped team

Who? Everyone in these trades has just next year left on their deals. Mantha is more expensive by about a mil and add 2 mil retention and we are helping Washington save $3 mil which in this scenario we have the cap space to do. Why not get extra assets?

i mean, come on, that saves $175K. Doesn't really change the fact that as it stands now the Flames have less than $400K in cap space with 11 F, 7 D, and 2 G under contract for next year. Not saying this is the deal they need to make, but something definitively needs to give there.

No thats the bury cap hit. Burying him opens up 1.125M cap space. Calgary will probably have to move someone to run a 22 or 23 man roster but they are by no means under pressure to dump a 2-3M player since they uave a few they can offer up all with positive value

I'm going off CF's numbers for next year, without Rooney included.

11 F (Kadri, Hub, Mangi, Backlund, Coleman, Lindholm, Toffoli, Dube, Coronato, Pelletier, Ruzicka) = $47,500,833
+ 7 D (Hanifin, Andersson, Tanev, Zadorov, Weegar, Gilbert, Kylington) = $27,262,500
+ 2 G (Markstrom/Vladar) = $8,200,000
______________________________________________
$82,963,333

Add in Rooney's $175K burial penalty and you're at $83,138,333 - $361,667K below the $83.5M assumed cap.

I think it's more likely they try and find a new home for Oliver Kylington (or LTIR him if he's still away from the team), but that glut of expensive defensemen is the easiest place to subtract money from. Including Zadorov, they have 5 guys making top-4 money, and Zadorov would be the easiest to move (Tanev is the guy I'd *want* to move but he's got that partial NTC.)

I mentioned Kylington last time but they want like a 2nd for him even though he hasn’t played at all this year. I felt this was getting something positive for a pending ufa but apparently that’s not good enough either

Yes I can do the math too and that is correct what you have there. I was simply correcting you on what burying Rooney saves. It saves 1.3M but cost 175k for the penalty, thus a net saving of 1.125M.

As for the roster. Even if we are just looking at what you have above that is 20 players and a hair over 350k cap space as is, so they really only need to make a minor trade to run even a 22 man roster. That can come from multiple ways though.
1. There is no guarantee on Kylington playing next year so they could just place him on non-roster or LTIR and that solves everything.
2. Dustin Wolf is absolutely NHL ready so the most likely trade candidate is Dan Vladar. With his very affordable cap hit and term plus his young age I imagine quite a few teams would be interested in him. Trading Out Vladar would open up an extra 2.2M cap space for a total of ~2.562M. Subtract Wolf's contract and that's $1,748,334 to fit 2 players. Duehr will probably sign his QO of 787.5k and then it's not hard to add a depth player
