Yeah, Ryjo's definitely overpaid by a few million, but if you have the cap space, he's a good middle six player. He gets tons of hate on CF because he never lived up to that contract, but he's not a liability on the ice or anything.
Funny you brought up McIsaac, because Lancebmx's frequent proposal is Veleno, McIssac, and a 4th. The Preds don't have room for another LD in NSH or MIL, so I swapped him out for JVP here. I now nothing about him, but the Preds could use another goalie or two in their system, and NSH does like their Swiss players.
This would be in a WPG is blowing it up scenario. Two 1sts, a 2nd, and a young player to roll the dice on seemed fair to me. Three 1sts feels like too much, unless the Jets take back significant salary too.
The only reason McIsaac is in trades isn't because he is bad. He should already be in the NHL right now. Injuries screwed his 1st 2 years. He was a top 4 billing, and he is pretty overall solid. There is a TON of potential, I just don't know that he gets there because he missed 2 full development years. In 1-2 years, he is easily an NHL player, I just don't know where.
The Detroit of two years ago would have had patience, and played him out next season. Problem is, not only do you have a glut of veterans at LD, you also have the deepest of deep pools of LD the league has ever seen. I'm not at all saying it will be true, but the number of top 4 LD in the system is ridiculous (Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johansson...plus Walman and Maata). Sebrango and Viro would both be viewed as top prospects at D in any other system but Detroit. McIsaac is in a numbers game. He is the most NHL ready LD in the system, by far, Edvinsson included (who debuted nicely). At minimum you have a bottom pair all situations guy. At best you have a top 4 D who is a PK specialist. He will never reach his 1D offensive defenseman potential, but his defense has improved drastically despite missing so much crucial time.
Why give up on McIsaac? He isn't waiver eligible anymore. Detroit has too many options at LD to keep him on board. He may very well turn out to be better than any prospect in tbe system of Detroit( I doubt it) but he is certainly going to be a player that is a "I wish we traded him for more" guy. When Detroit fans throw McIsaac into a trade, it isn't a throwaway; it is a "ran out of options" and trade for less than real value. Basically, what Yzerman did to acquire Walman.
