My concern

Description
My concern is I think this team is starting to look a lot like Chicago. Chicago missed playoffs for the first year two years ago, however core was still playing well. Stan Bowman tried to go all in for one last shot trading for Seth Jones and Fleury. Mortgaged the future, messed up their rebuild, and they didn't even make playoffs next year. Then they ended up being a bottom of the barrel team without even good draft picks coming up. It absolutely crippled their rebuild. Sometimes once a dynasty falls out of playoffs it's just over, no matter how well individual players are doing or what moves they make to try and contend again. It just feels like this year was the start of the decline as opposed to an off year. We've seen Detroit, Chicago, and others make these same mistakes before. It's better for us to sell our assets while they still have value, instead of 2-3 years when they may be traded for nothing.

Not much value in those trades for other teams. Extension nonsense.....Buffalo signs a UFA without giving up a first. Leafs would prefer Murray's one year cap to disappear but not at the expense of just adding the unneeded Pettersson. Not many teams have the cap to take on Rakell at his cap, and you want picks too?

Rakell is signed long-term and is good defensively, and Joseph has a reasonable future, so I wouldn't trade them, but I agree with you on the other two disposals. But if Montreal got Kirby Dach with his entire career ahead of him for #13 overall, I don't think that Buffalo is giving up the same pick for one season of Jake Guentzel PLUS adding a key element of their Jack Eichel trade.

While he is a good player I dont see a fit with Sabres he is to old to fit the core and alot to give up. I can see Sabres sign player similar to jake but little younger that can grow with this young team.

What younger similar player are they signing in free agency? There are literally zero UFA's available that scored as many goals as Guentzel, and all of the top goal scorers available (none of whom even cracked 30 goals) are the same age or older.
