building a real contender

Created by: fil97
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2023
Published: May 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1st line: they were really good this year don't touch it.
2nd line: geno and bertuzzi would be a nasty combo, third spot is for Nylander, Poulin and puusty to fight for.
3rd line: best third line since HBK?
4th line: solid defensively an much much speed.

(second and third line can vary based on what geno wants another option I can see is zuck-g-bertuzzi)

1st pair: the two best dmen on the team who showed good chemistry last year.
2nd pair: adding a very good shut down dman to help petry with his 5on5 defence. (we need bounce back year from him). also if graves wants too much or resigns we go for Soucy
3rd pair: I see poj taking another step this offseason just in terms of growing strength and giving him another shut down D that can use the body well.

goalies: hallybuck is a huge improvement, we give up a lot but I think the jets might go for this. new goalie of the future plus a very promising D

taxi squad: depth in Wilkes

also sign hornqvist on wbs and call him up for palyoffs just to fire up guys lol ALSO lets monitor the flower situation

That offer, Doesn't even come close to getting Connor Hellebuyck out of Winnipeg, I truly doubt they even have the pieces to land him.

Granlund is tradeable, but not like that. You’ll have to take money back on a contract another team wants to move. For a straight cap dump like that you’d have to sweeten the deal with a pick. Not a first, like some of the dullards around here think, but it ain’t gonna be for free, either, that’s for sure.

This team would be great. Not sure if WPG would accept that though - and EDM probably matches.

I believe they would accept this deal if they really think of a retool. if they still feel they can compete with this roster prolly not. Blomqvist is one of the best goalie prospects we could also add another player like gurden, but goalies values are always less than people think.

if EDM matches (they will be really close to the cap) there are other options as 3C that can work as well Dvorak, roslovic etc.

seeing some posts of here many cbj fans didn't mind him. he is obviously a place holder for the young kids to grow without burning them. they have the space, and he is still a serviceable player he is just overpaid by 2 mil. and can be traded at the TDL after this season.

and sure put a 3rd with him I don't mind.

It's gonna cost more than a 3rd.

He has two years left so 4 million. The jackets don’t really have a need for him if they get a top center in the draft. There’s also rumors they are getting Hayes at 5 million. They have plenty of guys who can play bottom 6 center

I mean, I really wouldn't say he's that good, either.

As a player, not sure there is really any market for him. He's an overpaid B6 C with term. If you want to retain half, I think you could find a taker if you couple him with a 3rd. Full cost would be pushing a conditional 2nd, probably, depending on how desparate PIT is and what the market is like.

yes, remember I try to trade to Columbus because I believe there is a fit there, anyhow Arizona exists, they will need to make the floor so a contract like this can't hurt them and we can pay a bit to get rid of him. we have to try and go all in for next year and the year after, after that the window will be closed for a while.

AND the buyout costs only 800k so worse case scenario we buy him out. PIT is not going to pay much to get rid of him

Granlund's numbers indicate he is a perfectly adequate 3rd liner. He is overpaid by about 2MM but he is productive enough that it wouldn't take more than 2MM retention or a low 3rd attached to him to move.

I have the numbers, he's not as bad as everyone says. He is overpaid and Hextall gave up a 2nd for him because he sucks at his job.

Oh, I agree on all counts. There is a fit with CBJ, sure, but with where the team is at in its rebuild, I'm just not sure Granlund is a player they'd go chasing. Plus, I know Hextall was a mess, but it's also the optics of throwing more bad money around, so to speak.

How bad is PIT's cap situation next year?

That would be too much for Hellebuyck unless he came with an extension. He had a good season but last year was just ok and he had a poor playoff.

it is not bad we have a bunch of cap space and his 5 mil will be great to have. look at the thread, I resigned zucker at 4 and then signed: bertuzzi 6 mcleod 3 sunqvist 2 mayfield 2 helleybuck 3 greaves 5

we have room for one last 2years push

Haven't read it all, but the discussions around Granlund are kind of absurd. Yes, Hextal made a bad trade, but lets not forget that Granlund was just traded for a 2nd. Sure he scored one goal with the Pens, but ~20 games with a new team, in a new city is not enough to crater a players value from a 2nd to needing a 2nd or 3rd to dump him. There is definitely a team that would gladly take a versatile forward that can play all three positions, has some offence (career best 69pts, never played for a high offence team before) and can work on the pk. My prediction for him is that someone will take him on for as low as a 7th or as high as a 4th.
