Next year after playoff comeback

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 11, 2023
Published: May 11, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is if the Leafs come back and beat the Panthers. I assume one of their top guys gets moved if they lose to the Panthers.

Matthews extends 13m x 8
Nylander extends 9m x 8

Have an 8 man D rotation throughout the year to keep guys healthy.

Gudas and Hatthaway would be fun additions :)

Cap would be very tight the year after. Depends on what it goes up to of course.

Thoughts?

As a blackhawks fan i would accept that. Can possibly take another quality forward or a RHD at the end of the first round and its about a 14-16 pick difference.

I would be very cautious about throwing #1 duties on Woll so quickly. He's done great at every level he's played at so far but he's never played more than 32 games in a season as a pro and there's been some injuries along the way. I think he's their best option right now (I said I woulda started him in game 3 for multiple reasons), but you can't just throw him to the wolves like that. Smarter idea would seem to be to bring Samsonov back on a short term deal and let them be a tandem until you see what Woll really is.

agreed. I usually keep him. Depends how much he asks for. I have REALLY liked Sammy. But I do see the scenario where they move him. I do like the idea of Sammy + Woll.

But I signed a great vet in Varlamov here to help insulate Woll.

I think it makes sense for both teams. Murray played well when he was healthy for the Leafs. Unlike Mrazek who was unplayable for us. Chicago can keep Murray or buy him out. The buyout is super reasonable.

Samsonsov doesn't have much experience as a starter so I wouldn't see him getting a lot on the market (and he's a RFA so Toronto has his rights anyways). I think something similar to what Georgiev got with Colorado seems like a reasonable comparison. I found a way to keep both and see how it develops, check it out: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4175438

I would take that any day of the week. I think his best comparable is actually Ville Husso though - https://www.capfriendly.com/players/ville-husso

I think it's clear the Husso was overpaid based on a small sample size which would put leverage back in Toronto's favour. At most I can't seem Samsonov getting more than $4m tbf

I usually go with 4.25m x 3 years for Sammy. somewhere in between Husso and Goergiev. Time will tell!

How about signing O'Reilly for $4.5 million, Compher for $4.25 million, buying out Murray and keeping the Boston first?

I wouldn't count on Woll being the starter next season. He's played "Woll" enough but the Leafs did a great job defensively around him last night. He wasn't really tested. The few shots he did face he did his job. But I think the Leafs blocked more shots than Woll did.

Panthers looked like the Red Wings last night. Unable to get shots through. It had to frustrate them. I don't know if this is a 1 off or if the Leafs have figured something out. I just think Woll didn't have to face any real scoring chances. Credit to the Leafs F and D.

If O'Reilly and Compher do that, then sure. As for the Murray buyout, I would rather pay the asset to move him. The year 2 on the buyout would hamper the Leafs quite a bit.

Husso was playing for a worse team. If not for him Detroit easily has one of the worst records in the league. We have Seider and a bunch of meh on D if you hadn't noticed.

Hawks arent looking for a salary dump at goaltender but if the price is right, they'll buyout Mrazak and run Murray/Soderblum tandum.
