I'd rather have Zucker than Barb. Then you could put him on your 2nd LW move Rust to 3rd RW and Druin to 3rd LW. That would be 3 killer lines.

Agree. Murashov looks like a solid prospect but he won't be coming over for at least two more years.

Carter isn’t going to waive so just give up that fantasy.
Why trade Rutta just to sign Mikkola to almost the same cap hit? Just keep Rutta and play Smith on his natural side.
Why waste 2.5 million on Drouin when you can get better players with that cap?
Hallander signed in Sweden. They can’t sign him. The pens are just going to let his rights go.
Why have Poulin and Puustinen sit on the bench?
Scheifle would absolutely be 2RW, Barb 3C, Nylander 3RW, Puustinen 3LW, Carter 4RW.

Way better uses for the cap.

The Jets' ask for Scheifele is Pittsburgh's 2023 1st, but we'll retain 50% to give you cap flexibility.

Ottawa will give you a 5th round pick for DeSmith and nothing more.

If it’s to a good enough team he would

Rutta didn’t work out, Mikkola is a young defenseman and we need youth in the lineup

What “better uses” are you thinking of considering we need a 3RW in this case with cap to spare and I had just a grand total of $3.5m to spend so not really sure what you’re trying to get at there.

They still have his rights

Poulin and Puustinen both aren’t ready for full time roles in the NHL and those “better uses of cap” that you speak of can be way better used then playing Poulin and Puustinen in our lineup. That’s a huge skill gap between those 2 guys and who I have on this team….

“Way better uses for the cap” when you literally listed everything I did with the exception of keeping Jan Rutta and adding in Poulin/Puustinen.

No he wouldn’t. He doesn’t want to keep moving his family. That’s why he wanted the full NMC. It took a ton of convincing just to agree to be traded from LA.

How didn’t Rutta work out? And the answer isn’t to just bring in a younger equivalent to Rutta. If you’re going to trade Rutta at least upgrade from him. Youth means nothing if it’s not good youth.

Well first off…Drouin isn’t a RW, he’s a LW. 2nd, Drouin sucks with a lot of health and mental concerns. You’re spending a nice chunk of cap overpaying for Drouin who may be work 1 million at most. You can likely get similar production from Nylander for almost 2 million cheaper.

He signed in Sweden until he’s 27. Which will make him a UFA regardless. They can’t just sign him and say “well the contract you just signed in Sweden is no longer valid” lol. So they can’t sign him for 5 years and then he’d be a UFA so it’s pointless to even retain his rights as they are worthless.

Poulin may not be ready, at least at the start, but Puustinen absolutely is ready. He’s had two straight great years in the Ahl. There is not much left for him down there. Other than just risking him going the Hallander/Lindberg route and we lose him to Europe too.

I also upgraded the backup goalie too. Rather than give a career backup who is basically like DeSmith a 1B salary. Give an actual 1B tender a 1B salary. So I upgraded your 2RW, 3RW, 3LD, 3RD, and backup goalie simply by not trading players then downgrading by overpaying for bums similar to what Hextall did by not protecting Tanev and signing McGinn to almost the same cap hit to replace him. And protecting and paying Kapanen over McCann.
