Avs 23-24 - 2C at trade deadline

Created by: bcooke
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2023
Published: May 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Thoughts on how to utilize Landy's LTIR savings to make a cup run this year. Drouin would start at 2C. Then use the '24 first as part of a package to grab a 2C with an expiring contract to add to the top 6.

Lindholm will cost more than horvat. You’re looking at a first and new hook at a minimum

MacDermid is below the cost threshold for no cap hit burying in the AHL, why are you paying to dump him?

What makes you think Calgary will be selling at the TDL

Think the package starts with the '24 1st and next big chip would be the '25 first. But would probably look elsewhere unless FO has info that Landy won't be back for '24-'25. Can't give up Newhook and a 1st for a rental. Understand other teams probably can beat if they are willing to resign. Will be other options like Rico, etc for cheaper.

Not an expert on cap manipulation. Thought that would be the cheapest way to move him off the roster.

New coach, New GM. Situation has potential to turn south. Though I expect them to be better next year. Shouldn't lose all those 1 goal games again. Lindholm would be top of my list for trade deadline rentals if things do go south. Or if he doesn't want to resign with the new coach/gm.

Kuzy is interesting to me. I've done some ACGMs where the Avs bring him in. Just gets tricky planning for a Toews extension and bringing Landy back in '24 without significant retention.

Lindholm is going to cost more but if the Avs can find a way to work out the money to sign him long term then giving up Newhook in the trade isn't such a bad scenario as Lindholm is then set for a long run as your 2C. A decent, inexpensive 3C is all you need then and if you've gone for a C with the '23 draft pick, say Stenberg, then you're potentially in a good position long term.
