It seems fair but I don't know if for the Sabers it would be worth giving up Savoie for 2 years of Marner

Mitch Marner is great, but he’s not a top four defenseman. Also I don’t think I can picture Buffalo trading any of those major assets anyway tbh.

Yeah, can't see Buffalo doing that. Not a bad idea, just don't see Adams doing it

Probably need a third team in both marner and Mathews trades to eat some cap and send some vet players that hit la/buf/tor windows and paid in picks for eating cap and vets. Tough to buy and Mathews/marner cap and stay in window of competitive. Also a shrinking window to do it without extensions.

I kinda disagree that the Leafs can't stay competitive even without Matthews/Nylander/Brodie in 24/25 or Yavars and Marner in 25/26. That's 45.5m to retool around other UFA or signing RFA long term.
The only question is whether the Leafs will be selling before the playoffs and get a return for their upcoming UFAs, and in affect "give up" on the season.
Regarding the trades posted, can't see any teams giving up so much

I just meant the team buying those players and contracts, to keep them competitive, might need a third team to either make money work or move some of there vets for picks so return works too. Possibly a team like Winnipeg with the cap and an Ontario boy in scheifele, scheifele ends up in Toronto and some cap and picks end up in Winnipeg as part of the deal to make it all work.

You're right in your analysis. As Leaf fan, I certainly hope the Leafs don't get the losing situation where they acquire upcoming UFAs for a Cup run. Hasn't help the Leafs in the past years, and has left the Leafs with a poor prospect pool, and in the future so many good picks have been traded away.
Here's my prediction for Matthews. If the Leafs (hopefully with a new GM) are sellers, Matthews is traded to LA Kings. closer to TDL so his cap isn't so prohibitive to the Kings. IMO Matthews wants to play in LA, and they will have cap for him in 24/25 if they desire. Matthews may like a trade with a extension in place as now he has eight year contract as opposed to seven as UFA.
But the trade return even with an extension. Byfield, Brandt and a first might be the return, I really don't think Leafs could expect more...I mean what leverage do they have if Matthews is determined to leave>

Kings have already said, they aren't moving Clarke, which is why I put in Spence

I don’t know what it is, but a nylander for kadri, kind of a leeman for gilmour replay, with no high stick by Gretzky miss this go round is kind of what I’m hoping is in the cards. But ya your probably right with Mathews to la deal, so so tough to gauge value in this era, with the cap in play and ufa status coming fast, basically exactly what la needs, will be interesting if Toronto can find exactly what they need also. So tough to win with 4/5 players from your nucleus making up so much of your cap and all softer skilled players, sure nice to have a few grinders in your skill group.

May be , but I wouldn't believe what a GM says. He's not saying publicly what his trading strategy is. But if Brandt is the hold up between having Matthews for eight years and risk not having him as UFA, well that would be the Kings decision....and the Leafs.

Flyers probably won’t move Laughton unless an offer blows them out of the water and that really isn’t it

He wouldn't move him this season for a top pair LD. I think he's pretty steadfast on this one player.

My thinking is that it gets us a 2nd this year (early 2nd) and a 3rd line wing replacement that will actually get a chance on a weak Flyers LW.

Yeah no I get ur thinking for sure I’m just not sure that Danny and Torts are looking to move him unless they are blown away because he was like the main leader of this team and what Torts trying to build. Sometimes guys are just invaluable unless a crazy offer comes even if he isn’t the best player he bleeds orange
