Offloading Marner and Murray Attempt

Description
Leafs, Red Wings and Yotes fans. Do we think these are sensible deals? Definitely trades from an area of surprise that I haven’t seen on this site.

TOR
    Conditional 2026 2nd Round Pick

    Toronto will receive the lowest of ARI/NYR/OTT 2026 2nd round pick
    ARI
    1. Murray, Matt
    Additional Details:
    2026 Conditional First Round Pick (lottery protected). If Toronto chooses to keep the pick, it will instead transfer their 2027 First Round Pick (unprotected)

    Toronto needs to save their elite assets to get real talent. Arizona can be happy they get to upgrade one of their three 2nds to a 1st.

    Additional Details:
    Conditional 2025 2nd Round Pick*

    If DET make the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Marner plays in 50% of the regular season games, or DET make the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, the pick becomes DET 2025 1st.

    That Detroit 2025 Pick is lottery protected and if they so choose to hold onto the pick, it will instead transfer their 2026 First Round Pick (unprotected)

    The Red Wings reward themselves with an elite top line winger and didn’t have to significantly mortgage the future. All it costed was two elite rentals who probably didn’t fit into the Wings long term plans and a pair of 2nds (one of them being a first if they make the dance).

    Raymond, Marner as the 1-2 punch gives the Wings elite wingers for years to come and they still get to hold onto their most valuable assets (their draft capital).

    Additional Details:
    It’s as clear as day that Toronto cannot run the Core 4 again. Something needs to give and shedding Mitch Marner’s contract will give them the space to fill out the rest of the roster.

    How do they use this newfound capspace? Get two elite rentals from the Red Wings who both potted 20 goals this past season. They also played a lot of games on the top line and each would’ve fetched a 1st in an individual trade.

    Since they are rentals, Toronto now has the cap space to pay Matthew’s and Nylander accordingly at the end of next season.

    AZ is taking a cap dump in exchange for a prospect that is likely 5-7 years from ever touching NHL ice? Toronto would be so lucky.

    Caveat for you, not a chance Murray will waive for AZ.

    Only way this leafs-wings deal happens is if Harold Ballard rises from his grave to take the team back from MLSE and enact 50 more years of suffering on Leafs Nation.

    No chance AZ wants to pay Murray's $6m actual salary to be their backup goalie. They pass.

    I know I’m not a Leaf’s fan. The Leafs need to shake up the Top 9. Maybe make the 2nd round picks, 1sts instead? Truth is moving nearly an 11 million dollar contract is very difficult and only a few teams in the league can take that hit and also need to be almost out of their rebuild. It’s going to be interesting to see what Toronto does.

    I get your point but this is highway robbery. Leafs can get a much better return for Marndog. Perron and Kubalik are both rentals. Yzerman doesn't make trades with Dubas.

    Honestly can't see any team doing this for a 1st that is 4 or 5 drafts away. That really only happens in the NBA.

    I think when it comes down to it, Toronto is going to lose any Marner deal if they trade him, just like how Calgary clearly lost the Tkachuk deal. 100 point players don’t grow on trees and they aren’t players meant to be dealt. They are supposed to be on the same franchise for almost their entire career. Like I said, it will be a very interesting offseason.

    Yeah but Yzerman doesn't have a Huberdeau to trade for Marner. I don't think MM will be traded. Lots of patting each other on the back at Leafs press conference. They're running it back. Keefe will be axed but that's about it.

    I guess so. Like I said in the description, I tried to deal from an area of surprise. Clearly, it didn’t work out!

    Real. There really isn’t a good solution to the problem. Any trade that looks like too much gets declined, while anything else looking like a fleece. I actually think they are going to run it back as well.

    Edit: That was the biggest problem in formulating the trade is who compares to Huberdeau. Maybe Raymond could be a Huberdeau, but no way Detroit ever deals him. Gotta get creative…

    Raymond might be a future Huberdeau. Maybe. But he's too young and unproven right now. Plus he's not available unless it was a ridiculous offer Yzerman couldn't refuse.

    It's tough to argue that the solution for the Leafs is trading franchise players. You just can't do it because in one way or another they backfire on you. Change can come through coaching and what the message is thats going to the players, systems etc. and hopefully they look to add toughness in the offseason through free agency. Tyler Bertuzzi is exactly what leafs need. I know they need it from the core guys as well but physicality and toughness can be developed on a team throughout the year.

    Leafs need to do something to shake things up with those core players making all the money. In my opinion they're too comfortable. That mix just isn't working come playoffs.

    They need a Shanny for Primeau, Coffey and a 1st trade. Change the team dynamic. Look at Florida with Tkachuk? Completely different team. Dollars don't make leaders. I don't know if the Leafs have one?
