Says who? They should 100% consider the possibility of doing so if it opens the door for more/better offers.

You don’t to retain on a player like him. That’s poor cap management.

That's a generalized statement you're making with zero insight as to what the potential benefits could be. Narrow minded thought process.

Personally, I think giving up on Dobson that quickly would be a mistake. look at Devon Toews

You don’t retain on star players with term on their contracts because you don’t have to to get the appropriate value. Even without retaining Toronto can still get a very quality player and offer for Marner. So why would you retain on Marner’s contract just to add unnecessary cap? Then come deadline day you have $2m less in cap for not only next season but the year after. That’s 2 more playoff runs that makes it even harder to add depth when it’s needed.

But yeah it’s narrow minded to not retain on a star calibre player. 🙄

It's not "just to add unnecessary cap" it's to expand the field of potential buyers and up the return value. I'm not saying you have to do it - everything comes with pros and cons - but to not consider all available options, especially when it comes to a deal of this caliber, would be a disservice to the franchise and, yes, is narrow minded.

Oh, you mean like Vancouver retained 25% on Bo Horvat?

Or like San Jose retained 50% on Timo Meier?

Or like St. Louis retained 50% on Ryan O'Reilly, which is how he became cheap enough for Toronto to buy him?

Marner's nearly $11 million cap hit makes him almost impossible to trade without retention. What non-contender is going to want him? What contender is going to have the cap space to absorb the entirely of that hit?

Congrats. You found 3 trades where teams retained on players who were pending free agents and the team trading them weren’t contending. But you really showed me!

Yeah, when your ill-thought-out and unfounded overgeneralization gets unassailably refuted by actual evidence, the best thing to do is just pretend it didn't happen.

I dont view this as giving up on Dobson. I view this as using him to acquire a superstar.

No.. there’s a big difference in retaining on a player for 1/2 a season when you know you’re not making playoffs, compared to retaining on a player for 2 full seasons when you’re contending for a top spot in the league.

Don’t know why you feel the need to resort to insulting people though so take care bud.
