Associate gm, but sharp guy, and another voice in the room. Just read he has his second interview this week for the pens gm job. Naturally.
Like most Sabres fans, any exit of Karmanos and/or Ventura has me very worried - they've been instrumental in the Sabres hitting on so many draft picks and trades. I know Adams believes in the open door policy and doing "the right thing" by allowing either guy to interview because it follows the same mantra of wanting "people who want to be in Buffalo" but I wish he had (or will soon) taken the proactive, approached each guy and rewarded them with promotions to GM (Karmanos) and AGM (Ventura) to entice them to not look elsewhere. By all accounts, Pegula trusts Adams implicitly and with Kim not likely to fulfill the President role she used to hold, it just makes too much sense for Adams to get promoted to PoHO to continue overseeing things but allowing Karmanos/Ventura to lead things in more visible roles.
It mystifies me though why Karmanos even is entertaining interviews with the Pens - sure, he's familiar with their organization and AHL affiliate but he's also smart enough to know they're on the downward path to a long rebuild (as opposed to the upward trajectory he's helped orchestrate in Buffalo) and will have his hands tied by FSG in having to keep the 3 big stars on board, not to mention an entrenched coach. Sure, he was fired by Rutherford 3 years ago but is there no pride to consider going back to the franchise that cut him loose? I also recall that he had other offers after leaving Pittsburgh but chose Buffalo because of his long friendship and relationship with Adams from their Carolina days. In Ventura's case, he left voluntarily to re-join Karmanos, who hired him originally in Pittsburgh.
I've heard some Sabres fans color the potential departures as a sign of flattery on the Sabres finally doing something right and earning some attention around the league in the process but it's too soon for the Sabres to allow poaching of their management teams.
Hopefully, Dubas jumps at the Pens situation to put it all to rest!
