How can we move Jeff Petry

Created by: Pens3lieve
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 20, 2023
Published: May 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Petry alledgedly requested a trade from MTLto be closer to his family… meaning he wants to live in the north eastern US. Meaning cities like Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, and Columbus could be possible destinations
Not sure if he has any value or even some negative value because of his contract but I wonder if any of those teams would take him off our hands and for what price

Certainly won’t be Columbus taking him with at least five NHL caliber RD who combined barely make as much as Petry does.

          Spitballing here, but

          Chicago Blackhawks
          Petry
          2023 1st round pick (PIT)
2024 2nd (conditional on Caleb Jones scoring X amount of points or it becomes a third)

          Pittsburgh Penguins
          Connor Murphy
          Caleb Jones (RFA)
          2023 2nd round pick NYR.

Seriously? This is just awful for the Hawks. Don't want #14 that bad

I think if you’re dumping Petry, we need to look at other cap dump trades.

Dylan Coghlan was a throw in for Patches (who is a much better player than Petry). I think in any trade, Owen Pickering is attached to any deal if you don’t want to part with your 1sts and another mid round pick since there’s multiple years left on his contract.

          Edit:

Jeff Petry, Owen Pickering. 3rd round pick gets you off his cap hit.

No problem. Also Toronto had to throw in a first to dump Marleau. Gotta pay to play

I think the main questions are do we actually want to move him? And who are we getting to replace him?

In a vacuum, Petry has value. He had a good season and has value to the Pens. The issue, is he doesn't have much trade value due to age and AAV. Teams like CBJ, CHI, and PHI and other teams that aren't going to compete this year have no reason to give up something for him. And teams that are on the verge of competing like BUF and DET most likely don't have the cap space or are better of spending that cap space elsewhere.
