11 different reasons why this is a good trade for Detroit

DET
  1. DeBrincat, Alex [RFA Rights]
OTT
  1. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
  2. 2024 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
1. There is no guarantee that Alex DeBrincat plays for Detroit at any point in his career without being traded there.

2. The Islanders' 1st round pick is #17 overall and there is a steep drop in value between #7 overall in 2022 and #17 overall in 2023.

3. The Bruins' 1st round pick is Top 10 Protected and is in 2024, not 2023.

4. This is how high the Bruins' 1st round pick has been for the last 6 years:

2018 --- #26 overall
2019 --- #30 overall
2020 --- #27 overall
2021 --- #21 overall
2022 --- #22 overall
2023 --- #28 overall
.

5. A player drafted late in the first round using the Bruins' 1st in 2024 could very easily be taken in the second round in 2023.

In other words, even though it's nominally two 1st round picks, it's arguably a 2023 1st + a 2023 2nd in value.

6. Detroit is not losing any players off their roster.

7. A 25+ goal scoring Top 6 forward is going to Detroit while the same one is being taken away from a division rival.

8. Detroit was ranked #24 in the league this season in Goals For.

If you add to that DeBrincat's 27 goals from this season with Ottawa, Detroit would be ranked #15 in Goals For.

If you add instead the 41 goals DeBrincat scored in his last season with Chicago, Detroit would be ranked #10 in Goals For.

Detroit desperately needs more scoring because it could be the difference-maker for whether Detroit makes the playoffs.

9. There is no guarantee that either of the two 1sts in this trade will become an NHL player.

10. The difference in value between these two firsts and what some Wings fans have proposed for DeBrincat in ACGM is negligible.

11. Detroit will eventually have to take a big step forward and emerge from their rebuild.
2.
DET
Why is this a good trade for Ottawa?

    3 reasons:
    OTT
      1. This trade would allow Ottawa to "save face" from the first DeBrincat trade with Chicago.

      2. Ottawa is getting #17 overall in 2023 + a late 1st in 2024 that is Top 10 protected

      Versus

      #7 overall in 2022 + #39 overall in 2022 + a 3rd in 2024

      3. Sometimes, players on one NHL team aren't always the best fit on another.

Counterpoint, that Bruins team is about to fall off a cliff

DeBrincat has a 7 million dollar QO and may just walk away regardless

Cat didn't have a great season

2023 is a much deeper draft than 2022, 17th overall in a deep draft like this is not a steep drop from 7th overall in what was a particularly shallow draft in comparison.

There are cheaper alternatives than Cat.

Counterpoint to the Counterpoint awesome face

      1. The Bruins just won the President's Trophy and is a near lock to make the playoffs again, if not win the division.

      2. We are getting a brand new billion-dollar owner with a celebrity status who will stop that from happening.

      3. Cat will bounce back.

      4. Every draft is as unpredictable as the last one.

      5. There are cheaper alternatives, but most of them aren't as elite as the Cat.

      Counterpoint counterpoint counterpoint

Boston is about to lose Bergeron and Krejci and can only spend 79 million due to overages.

You're going to get a new owner, but that doesn't mean they'll want to pay Cat.

Cat may bouncback, but his value is lower right now than it was when the Sens picked him up. Not to mention he doesn't have a contract.

Drafts are unpredictable, but deeper drafts have higher value picks than shallower drafts. A 2003 1st is worth more than a 2004 1st for example. 2003 is the best draft class ever. 2004 was... it was alright.

Considering Marner is supposed to be available, as well ass Winnipeg, and Pittsburgh among others looking at rebuilds, Tarasenko sitting in free agency, and possibly seeing Travis Konecny moved, there are options better than Cat as well as cheaper that won't have as high a cap hit. Example Kyle Connor (that would cost a pretty penny but you get the idea)

Along with above points from Caniac2000. There are other reasons why it's not a good trade.
      1. The QO is actually $9M.
      2. In comparison to the Ottawa trade, Ottawa technically got two years of team control with one of those years at a very reasonable 6.4M cap hit.
      3. The risk of him walking after one season.
      4. If you are going to compare the Boston 1st to, we will say Detroit's second this year, I would rather send a second next year along with a third and take a gamble that the Boston 1st is better than every one that you listed of theirs in the past. Not to mention if it's in the early 20s like in 21 and 22 then that is still a really good pick.
      5. Trading for another smaller offensive minded forward wouldn't be the best. Berggren, Fabbri, Kubalik and Raymond are all offensive minded although Raymond did improve is two way game this season.
      6. I don't think there is a big push to be competitive yet. Even though we are at year 7 of the rebuild, we are only year 4 of the Yzerman rebuild. Holland only hit on like 2 players in the last 3 of his drafts so I consider the rebuild actually starting in 2019.

Debrincat would instantly make this team better, I agree. I don't think the two firsts package is the best package for Detroit to give up.

ill end this whole conversation with this, OTT will NEVER trade Cat to a DIVISIONAL RIVAL.

remember this is the same Gm who traded Hoffman to SJS for less than to trade him within the same Division/conference for more.

Carolina have probably been the better team, just cannot solve Bobrovsky and the tkachuk has been the biggest pain in the backside.

Put top-20 protection on the Boston pick

      …or…

The 2023 17th overall pick (NYI) and the option to switch 1st round picks with Detroit in 2024 or 2025.

I'd prefer to do the Boston pick and a combo of nhl players and/or prospects. Don't want to part with 17, or lose two firsts for a very expensive player who could bolt.

Would I trade Colby Barlow & Pick #11 for Debrincat shakes head That could end up being the worst case scenario. Way too big of a risk.
