I get the idea of trading assets for players that we want to solidify in our status of contention but it’s a matter of knowing how to use your assets and doing it wisely….

Having 0 combined top 64 picks for the next 2 years is not the answer… ESPECIALLY giving up that 2023 first at 14th OA, that pick CANNOT be traded under any circumstances unless it’s to move down in the draft….

14 overall is worth more than Hall and Ullmark combined

Okay, if that’s your evaluation and you read the bio who is a player you’re moving 14 OA for? My justification is Ullmark is likely a Vezna winner and Hall is still a top 6 option. They don’t coke free, regardless of Boston’s cap situation. I can live with the argument they’re not worth 14th OA but then who is?

If we trade that pick (I don't think we should) it has to be for a major major game changer. Like a Marner type that will completely change the trajectory of the team. Trading it for Ullmark, a goalie who had one good season behind an insane D, would be really really bad for us. And I don't mean that as a shot at Ullmark, I think he's really good, but just would make no sense for us.

Understandable. However the odds of landing a game changer drafting with the 14th pick is pretty slim. Go look at the history of 14th pick. That pick is not as valuable as you think and the offer is really an under value for the return. 🤷🏻‍♂️. Since 2000 the only true difference maker is Mac. A few good players Debrusk, Farabee, Holloway. Rest are middle of roster to busts. And Mac was rated as a bubble top 10 pick who slid a bit.

You’d rather pass on Ully and Hall to draft the next Wenneberg, Zegmus, Oleksiak or worse Zack Boychuk? The pick is good, it’s not gold. Quite frankly, much like Boston, you don’t have enough in your system to add to that pick to get Marner. Saros could be a possibility.

This draft is absolutely insane and we are 1-2 years away from a rebuild with the worst prospect pool in the league. That gives the pick way move value

It gives the pick more value to the Pens. Not to other teams. Boston has been in the same situation for a couple of years. Keep the pick and start building up that crappy farm system, or use it to try to get through the open window before it’s to late.

This draft is deeper than most. But the odds of landing a star player there is still slim, a good complimentary player is the most likely outcome. It’s Russian Roulette. 🤷🏻‍♂️

PensFan below is about where I am. Saros. Marner. That type. Someone young and great or with a ton of track record.

Ullmark is too unproven and Hall is a good depth piece but volatile in his production. Neither is worth the risk of 14 overall.

I totally agree about value goes both ways, but if the Pens are loath to move it, they would have to feel like they "won" the trade.

But from our perspective the only way we should trade it away is if an insane deal comes around or for a massive massive player. This just isn't it. Like Marner, for example, would change the entire landscape of our team. A 1st alone wouldn't get him. But a 1st + Guentzel? I don't know. Only way I'd consider it is something like that.
