Description
I’m sure a lot of people will share their criticisms about this roster but I just wanted to have a little try at the Maple Leafs. Now I’ll admit I’m not the most familiar with all of their prospects and players but obviously something’s needs to change in Toronto and I don’t believe it is a full on rebuild or even a retool. Now I’ll address some of the questionable signings in some of peoples eyes, I resigned Victor Mete as a sort of 7th or AHL level defensemen because I personally like him as a player. A quick, shifty offensive defensive-men never hurts to have on the roster. I resigned Justin Holl because I know some Leaf fans like him and some hate him. I don’t know if he’d sign for less than 1 million but maybe it would ease both sides of the spectrum knowing that he’s signed at least but not for too much. I resigned Kallgren as a 3rd Goalie. I don’t know much about the goalies in Torontos system right now but if there are better and younger goalies there already than I’m fine to let Kallgren go. I wasn’t sure on what to really add to Torontos lineup to change it up but I knew they needed to gain some cap space so instead of trading Nylander or any of the core 4, I decided to move TJ Brodie. I imagine Brodie is able to be moved and in doing so I signed Damon Severson as I thought that he was one of the only free agent defensemen that fit in on this team. Toronto also needed a better Top 4 after moving Brodie. Besides all of that, I don’t know how much it would cost to move Matt Murray but I believe it has to be done to create cap space for this team. I believe this team should give it another go before totally blowing it up and starting new. I hope you guys enjoy my roster and thanks for checking it out.

I appreciate the description. A few things...
1. I doubt Holl will stay. Fans have been so hard on him that I think he is ready to move on. He would also make more on the open market than he would in Toronto.
2. Kallgren won't be resigned as Toronto has a lot of up-and-coming young goalies in their system.
3. I'm certainly open to trading Brodie as he is on an expiring contract. My problem with it is that you would need to replace him. You did so with Severson and while I think that he is a good player, I think that he isn't strong enough in his own end or on the PK. This makes Toronto's D more offensive than defensive.
4. I'm convinced that this core with disappoint again. I hope I'm wrong but I believe that the only way forward is to move on from one of Marner or Nylander, clear out Murray, and try and get younger. Build a team around Matthews and get him some consistent wingers to play with

No premium bits out for pending UFAs, not to mention Brodie has a 7.5 million actual salary due next season (all base no signing bonus) which is a major poison pill for us.

I can understand that. My thoughts were to maybe flip him at the deadline if he plays well enough or you can keep him and pay him a lower amount for the coming years. I know there’s a lot of defensive prospects coming up for Anaheim but Brodies a veteran in the league at this point and could probably slot in somewhere on that blue line.
Also Lafferty is in the deal and he’s a solid bottom 6 player.
