I'm curious to know which part of Murray's time in Toronto makes you think that he played well enough to be a positive asset? He hasn't had a season where he's been above league average since 18/19, he hasn't played more than 27 games in a season since 19/20, where he played 38, and he's owed $6 mil in actual money next year.

Verbeek has also shut down the Gibby trade stuff a couple of times.

"I'm not considering moving John Gibson," Verbeek said flatly. "I've actually sat down and had a conversation with him about this. We have an excellent number one goaltender. The hardest thing in the NHL is finding a number one goaltender and I can speak from experience on this, because when we were in Tampa, we did not have a number one goaltender and we gave up numerous assets trying to chase one.

"Finally we were able to draft one with Andrei Vasilveskiy. When you have one, you don't give them up unless you've got another one that's coming behind. At this point, we're very young with our goaltenders and certainly we're not at that stage where anyone can take John Gibson's position at number one right now."

Gibson isnt being traded

Takes at least a 1st to dump Murray, and the Ducks dont have space to take him so LeafLand will have to look elsewhere

Oh, we'll take Murray off your hands whether we trade John Gibson or not. The standing offer is the Boston 2023 second in return for Murray and the Boston 2023 first.

Straight to buy-out: $687,500 first year and $2 million second year. His contract is under water, but I'll pay only actual cash for that first in this draft year in a heartbeat.

I would absolutely hate that move, takes up a massive chunk of our internal budget whether we buy him out or not

I dont think I could be more against something honestly. No need for us to add anything in exchange for taking 6M in real money.

cost the Leafs a 1st to do it with Marleau, cap space has gotten exponentially more valuable since then. Why give up anything when the team we'd be trading with is the one that set the precedent of trading 1sts to dump cap. Especailly when it would make our goalie room cost over 10M

Thats a Bob Murray type move, Verbeek is smarter than that

Verbeek did also say that The Samueli’s told him he could spend to the cap ceiling as well

I may be misunderstanding the CapFriendly buyout calculator summary (because it gives the cap hit breakdown between Ottawa and Toronto, but not the cash breakdown) but I think that the total out-of-pocket cost for the two years to Anaheim would be $4 million (3/4 of $5,333,333). I think that's a cheap price to pay to go from the second round to the first in this draft. It could be the difference between getting a nice backup goalie and Adrian Kempe. I'd roll those dice for that price.

people need to stop trading Matt Murray. He's going to be bought out. They went with Woll in the playoffs even with Murray healthy because they wanted to keep Matt Murray healthy. Why? for a buyout.

It was near the end of that pancake breakfast interview they did

Something along the lines of he asked them and they said he can spend to the ceiling to win
