Cat to Carolina and Knight to Ottawa

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2023
Published: May 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Carolina get a star goal scoring forward. Ottawa get a good young player, 3 picks and cap space.
Florida get cap relief, a replacement goalie and 3 picks.

I think this would be close to a perfect offseason for Ottawa.

I also think these trades make sense for Carolina and Florida as well.
Thoughts?

Why would Florida ever do that?

If Jarvis wasn't involved, I would have no issue. But Jarvis was a non-starter for Meier, who is undeniably better. Can't see them moving him for a Cat that is coming off a down year, and has a QO he's not worth

They have Bobrovski at 10m a year for many more years. Plus Knight had a down year and had some personal struggles. 14.5m cap space allocated to goalies is too much. They recoup some picks, get a replacement goalie and get cap space.

If they can get more from another team, then they should do it. But goalies almost never go for more than this.

Fair enough. The only 2 pieces I would be interested in from Carolina in this type of trade are Jarvis or KK. Maybe Jarivs + 3 picks is too much though.

Any suggestions as to what this trade would look like?

Canes would be better off keeping Jarvis and sending an offer sheet to Cat for 5x8.5 which equates to a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd or 6x8.5 and give up two 1sts, 2nd and 3rd.

I think roster pieces are going to be off the table for a guy that was outproduced by Martin Necas. Kotkaniemi plays a more valuable position and is a great defensive force signed forever and a day to a really good cap hit. Jarvis is a 40 point scoring child that couldn't even drink when he scored his 1st NHL hat trick earlier this season. I think it would have to be futures. 1st, 2nd this year, the Philly 2nd (which is basically a late 1st) next year? Something like that. Carolina have been very forthcoming about not moving roster pieces for short term fits. Under Waddell they moved Rask for Nino, Dzingel for Paquette (after kicking the can down the road a little), they don't move pieces they don't have to. Considering they need more scoring, it also doesn't make sense to subtract from the scoring you do have. Jarvis had 40 points, Cat had 68. That's 3 high round picks for 30 points... I think Cat has to be futures

Another Caniac on here believes Necas will be moved this offseason. Necas and a 2nd for Cat maybe... I personally don't think Necas will be moved.

I don't think there is a reasonable deal Canes would offer for Cat that doesn't include a bunch of mid-tier prospects and maybe a first. Very unlikely there's a player on the active roster that would be moved for Cat.

I am sure Ottawa would be interested in Necas. I just didn't put him in or contemplate him because he dropped over 70 points this year.

Thanks for your feedback!

I have little doubt that the Canes will move on from Necas this offseason

Why is that?

He is 24, just dropped 71 points and only costs 3m a year next year and is and RFA, so has team control after that.

Those are the type of guys you build around in my mind.

Friendly wager? I'm in the Raleigh area- full-season STM. I'll bring you to a game next year if you're right

Bob is only signed for 3 more years and is 34 years old, age could absolutely catch up to him at any moment between now and the end of his contract. Knight only just turned 22 a month ago, goalies generally take a few years to become true starters. Look at Saros, he didn't take over the net fully from Rinne until he was 26, and the few years before that they shared the crease. Sure 14.5M is probably too much to allocate to goaltending but Florida isn't in a financial crisis after this year. Lastly that return for him is pretty subpar, they should absolutely be able to get more than that considering his age and potential. As a Leafs fan you should know that with what Toronto paid for Freddy and he was in his mid 20's at the time. Goalies "almost never go for more than this" because good young goalies are almost never traded at all.

I look at this trade as very lopsided and foolish from Florida's POV. They just signed their 2 star players to long term deals and probably plan to at least stay competitive for 6 of those years. Bob at his age will certainly not be able to provide that by himself. As I also mentioned above the cap hits really don't hurt Florida moving forward so the incentive to open up cap space is significantly less relevant, whereas I look at Swayman in Boston and they actually do have a desire to open up cap space.

I too am a full time STM so I’ll probably already be at the game you’d try to take me too. It’s just a shame neither of us will be watching Necas.

Also the type of players teams who want to get younger crave. Looking at the raw numbers doesn’t tell the story. Dig into them a bit more to find the reason Necas will be moved. It’s the same story many young players find themselves in - a change of scenery needed.
