Marner is not worth Guentzel, the 14th pick and an additional first. He might not even be better than Guentzel tbh with you.

The real benefit to the Leafs winning is the fans don’t need to listen to all these proposals trading their best players.

Not only is Marner not worth it — the first round pick going to Pittsburg is completely worthless according to you.

He’s only a 26 year old that only averages over 100 points per 82 & is a finalist for the best defensive forward of the year. He’s only 33rd all-time in career PPG. He was only 1st team all-star at RW each of the last 2 season, beating Pasternak, Kucherov, & Rantanen. There are lots of those guys kicking around. Don’t forget he only had 14 points in 11 playoffs games — choker.

Leafs jealousy runs deep amongst some fan bases but when it leads to this kind of nonsense, you need to seek help. Guentzel is a good player, Marner is >>

I don't see Varlomov signing for just 2m. And Kerfoot at 3m, playing second line.....too much to pay and ask of him. If the Leafs are kinda in a rebuild mode.....yeah that trade would appeal to the Leafs.

I don't know if tis jealousy but their are many Leaf's haters. You won't get any meaningful dialog from them. They just spew hate and can't back it up with facts

Weird; I know leafs are the most popular team (on this site and in real world) and I see some pretty ridiculous posts by leafs fans but no more (% wise) than other fans just a lot more in terms of qty

I don't think the Leaf's will trade Marner as he's just to valuable to them.

I don't think this is bad trade over all Pens get in my opinion the best RW in the game right now (2nd best playmaker, Selke candidate) Leaf's get a 30+ goal score save some cap space and prospect+ draft pick to make up for the difference in the players and extra year on Marner contract

I just think too many people on here take it too seriously and with blinders on for their team instead of just having fun with it and layout a reason of why they disagree and maybe learn something

As an outsider who cares very little about either the Pens or the Leafs, I am intrigued by the idea of Marner to Pittsburgh. I don't care about debating his relative skill vs. Jake Guentzel (I'm not sure why this comparison is controversial, either. Of course Marner is the better player, but his cap hit is also so much higher that his skill advantage is essentially canceled out in terms of value to a team). Marner's got sky-high hockey IQ and is defensively responsible. He feels like an ideal RW for Crosby, even as Crosby hits his late 30s. I don't know Pittsburgh could possible make it work, though. You'd have to make other moves besides jettisoning Rutta and Guentzel, since you're not getting either of those two goalies that cheap.

Guentzel has had far more success in the post season in terms of both point production, and Cup wins. I’m not saying he’s a better regular season player, but the parity between star players in the NHL is closer than in any other league. That being said even if Marner is better, the gap between these two guys is not two first round picks.

I would agree with that a couple years ago, but I’d say that over the past couple of years Guentzel and Sid’s line in general has been shut down comparatively in the playoffs when they play a team or line that uses over physical play in order to shut them down offensively other than last year when the top line had a COMBINED 26 pts in 20 games, in the prior 3 playoff years they have had a COMBINED 18 pts in 42 total playoff games (for clarification each player had played a total of 14 playoff games each over the three seasons. Sid had 3 pts, Rust had 6 pts, and Guentzel had 6 pts) also in those past 4 years Marner had 25 points in a total of 30 (83%) playoff games in comparison to Guentzels 16 in 21 (76%)

Patrick Maroon has 3 cups. I guess you’ll be trading Guentzel for Maroon.

Guentzel played a large role in the pens back to back up wins, and Maroon was an important piece of two teams fourth lines for three straight cup runs. The two aren’t comparable.

Its not really 2 x 1st as Pens are getting a 1st back as well

That’s not a huge difference considering Guentzel’s production against the rangers, especially given the fact his team was banged up at the time.

Fine but trading up from 28 to 14 probably costs a first on its own anyway

That’s fair, I’m just stating that I think Marner and Sid would be a better pairing in the playoffs than Guentzel and Sid. Mostly due to the fact that Guentzel is less successful at playing his forechecking game in the playoffs due to his size, and when faced with a physical presence in the playoffs the line usually under performs

I don’t think of Marner as being someone who does a great job when faced with a physical opponent tbh, and I didn’t really see that kind of play from Guentzel a year ago or during the Pens back to back cup wins.

Agreed on the Guentzel points, but after Washington and St Louis won cups the league got more physical especially in the playoffs. I would say that out of the Rangers, Islanders, and Canadians the rangers played the least physical style against the Crosby line

Helps when Crosby, Malkin and Letang are on your team. Right now, today Marner is the better player and that’s all that matters, not ancient history.
