Id take this trade

Created by: pensfan21
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 5, 2023
Published: Jun. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We badly badly need an elite puck moving D who can help with the transition game. It is much easier to find a 1st line winger than a 1st pairing D. That's why I'd do this trade. Guentzel's contract expiring too also factors in. And not wanting to give out a massive 8-9 mil contract for long term 2 years away from a rebuild.

No thanks lol. Devon Toews being criminally undervalued on armchair GM lately.

It makes sense on some levels.
Pit gets a puck moving dman (maybe they can resign)
Col gets a top line winger who they can resign

Both are rentals
Both make around the same amount

Col gets less from the trade but if they don't think they can resign Toews, or prefer a winger to a dman, it makes sense.

Toews is as good of a defenseman as Guentzel is as a forward. That is why many of us have seen this idea floated by NHL pundits.

You can't call a guy criminally underrated if the trade is for a top winger on any team in the NHL.

I don’t see the Avs doing it because they have the wingers they need.

I think it's an interesting trade - but I wouldn't do it just because you're worried about a Guenztel extension. You're gonna have to sign Toews after this season for a massive pay raise as well.

This trade makes the Avs D so much worse tho. They need him. Think the whole world knows the Avs need a 2C and now a wing with the Landy news. So while I’m not arguing Guentzel doesn’t have good value, teams will need to pony tf up if they want him. Cuz I believe Avs will move heaven and Earth to extend him. Sam Girard’s days are numbered.

I don't disagree but Toews might be looking for 11MM per. Even if they dump Girard, they'd have to make room.

Hi!

”It is much easier to find a 1st line winger than a 1st pairing D. That's why I'd do this trade”. This is you, @pensfan21

You are right, and it’s also why Colorado won’t do this trade. Toews is a massive part of Colorado’s D-corp and 2C is the priority, not wing.

If I were Colorado I probably wouldn't do this trade, but lot's of fans seem for it, and I don't know as much about the team as they do. Just going off what they've been saying. Not all fans for it, but seems 50/50 at least. You guys do have Byram as well who I'm not super familiar with, but I have seen replace Tower as a top pairing D in many ACGM.

Not necessarily. At this point I'd take it year by year with this team. No limit for me on how soon rebuild will be or how much longer we'll contend for. Just all depends on how they play next year. And to me D is a bigger need than top 6, which is my reasoning for the trade short term.

Think it's closer to 95/5 as far as Avs fans saying they wouldn't do this. Byram will replace Toews someday, but not likely this year unless the Avs really liked the Toews/Girard pairing.

Not really sure why you’re under the impression that Avs fans seems to like it. My experience is the opposite. But yes, Colorado has a really high end D-corp. If they where to trade any of them, a 2C would be the priority coming back. Byram, Toews and Girard are all to valuable to Colorado to give up for a rental winger.

Lol, all the reasons you list as to why Pittsburgh would make the trade are the exact reasons why Colorado absolutely would not...

Yeah - I guess my point was if you're taking it year by year anyways then Guentzel's extension shouldn't play a factor.

But you addressed that in your last sentence so all good. Yeah it's a tough call. There's obviously no comparable replacement to either on the open market. I can see both sides - I'd be happy with the trade or keeping Guentzel. Avs fans really seem to not like it though haha

Of course you'd take it. It favours the Pens. Simples.

I think Jake will extend for 3-5 years.

I think Jake is staying as well. Maybe with no clause so he can be moved in case things really fall apart

I would be shocked if they give him a NMC
