Ottawa can't really make blockbusters or commit money... they could use the draft capital. Detroit could use more talent, and maybe even get Debrincat on a better deal than what he's going to get from the QO.

Yeah I agree with Detroit portion, but disagree with Ottawa's side. They're a team on the brink of contention and, from most of the conversations I've had on this site, they'd prefer NHL ready assets.
I wouldn't give them any of the top assets (1st round draftees, Wallinder, Mazur, and Soderblom) from Detroit though.

This feels too much like an NHL 23 type of a trade. Sure, the pieces may add up to be worth it for Ottawa, but it's not what they need.

That might be about as good an offer as Ottawa can hope to get for a pending RFA with a 9 mil QO that they haven't been able resign even they'd love to get him signed long term. Everyone thought Chicago was crazy trading Debrincat for what they got for him but they had probably been talking to him about an extension already and I'm starting to think maybe they found out he had crazy completely unrealistic expectations for his next contract.

Sometimes when a deal sounds too good be true (Debrincat to Ottawa) that's because it isn't as good as it sounds.

The fact is: when you present a Debrincat trade to other teams, they seem to want little to do with the guy because they feel the price tag is too high. It may, in reality, knock a lot of guys out of the bidding. Ottawa has no picks in the first three rounds of this draft so it's not a total loss. It's a step back, for sure, but they and many other teams won't think Debrincat is worth this much.

It all depends on whether Debrincat would say "I would take less to play here", well then that team starts to bid for him but since they're not competing with anyone else, they only have to make an acceptable enough offer. If Debrincat says "I would take less to play at these three cities", the bidding starts to get more competitive, and Ottawa can gain back some of their losses, but right now, they bought high and they might be forced to sell lower than fans expect.

I applaud you for probably coming closest to the actual deal!
