He's not severely overpaid, he does produce fairly formidable even strength metrics, particularly offensively. Doesn't provide much in terms of defense, but isn't a stand-out liability the way a Patrik Laine, Mike Hoffman, Mark Scheifele, or a Blake Wheeler is. I think what puts a dagger in Garland's trade value is that he doesn't excel on either special team's, so despite being pretty strong at even strength, the fact that it's hard to reconcile him playing a defined role on a roster when he isn't a go-to candidate for either special teams, COMPOUNDED by the fact that he's undersized, it's hard to envision a better fit for him on a roster outside of being a play-driving winger on a team's third line, something of which GMs would rather not spend close to 5M in cap space on. If Garland were on the market today, I still see him getting a contract that pays him in the low 4M dollar range annually, just because he does bring a relatively credible bottom line when it comes to even strength offense.
