BOLD but soft rebuild

Created by: McJoe7
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2023
Published: Jun. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hot take, the Flames should have rebuilt last season. They have put themselves in an awful spot long term with awful contracts all over the roster which WILL hurt them in terms of re-signing their other good players. The most fun, most bold move I think Conroy could make would be to escape that Huberdeau contract. It hasn’t kicked in yet and it has 8 more years at 10.5 million. There’s literally 0 chance he lives up to that and he may NEVER have a season worth that. If they can get someone to take it, that would be crazy and bold, so that was my starting point.

Vlader goes for around a 3rd, not a former first doing well as AHL rookie in both the reg and post season,

I was going to decline the Flames/Habs trade cause we would miss Anderson's style of play but if we made this trade andtraded Kidney the Panthers 1st and a 3rd for PLD then the lineup would be very interesting to say the least.

As a Habs fan and a Hubbie fan, I would like to see Huberdeau with the team. I would say that if you can get him down to around 8M/year the Habs could make that work. How do you feel about retaining 2.5M instead of 1M?

Toffoli is a pending UFA in his 30s, coming off a career year who was in Vancouver before. Boeser is 26(I think) and has way more upside, Flames can take a chance on a bounce back and keep him or flip him.

You're probably right. If the Flames pivoted and moved Huberdeau, thats their only shot I think.

This is their only chance to move Huberdeau I think if they want to move him. His chances of living up to that deal are 0. He's already 30 and he's 10.5 for 8 more years. 2022 was 23 points over his previous career high and like 40 over his second best season. He vastly overperformed and then the Flames paid him like he did that every year. That contract isn't good now and its going to be REALLY bad in 2-3 years, not to mention the other 5-6 years on the end of it. If the Flames can entice the Habs to take it, they should.

That feels like a lot to retain for 8 years but I bet you could split the difference. If I was running the Flames, I'd be trading him so I would probably do it, but I doubt they would want to eat that much for that long.

Habs would be lucky to get an Anderson & Dvorak for Huberdeau deal done with 2M retained.

Habs get better during the 1st 4 years, Habs maybe get worse for 4 years when Hubbie declines a bit, but the rising cap should more than cover it.

Columbus trade is impossible, pick conditions can’t be based on players resigning and Columbus already traded the 2023 LAK 1st yesterday for Proverov.

What is going on with people asking for the moon for goalies? That's not the market, nobody is paying that.
