1 year of Matthews is worth a lot, not that much though

Now instead of that trade in 2023, imagine signing Auston Matthews as a free agent in 2024 and having all of those players still on the team.

We're not interested in looking like Toronto or converting Toronto into a team looking like us.

Interesting trade... How about Toronto resigns Matthews instead? I like that idea

If Auston is traded anywhere it won’t be for 1 year

Matthews won’t be a UFA in 2024, he either signs as a Leaf or gets traded to the team that’s going to sign him for the next 4-8 years

Why would anyone pay premium for him to come pre-signed when they can sign him themselves?

If you’re trading for Auston Matthews he’s willing to go to your team (per his nmc) and will sign longer term there. If you’re not willing to pay the assets for that someone else will and get Auston for longer term

I also don’t think he will be traded at all, so I guess in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter

Again he will get a great return but it will be something more in line with Erik Karlsson.

I can say with the utmost confidence that Danault, Byfield, and Anderson would not be involved in the deal

I’m not arguing that the trade isn’t too much, I’m just saying it’s not 1 year of Matthews

You have posted some questionable opinions but are you seriously comparing Matthews value to Karllson’s 🤯? Next level bud

But it is in terms of trade value. I completely agree that he probably wouldn't waive to a team he isn't willing to sign an extension with after. But that doesn't change the fact that he is traded to that team with only 1 year of term. Unlike with Tkachuk, Severson, and likely both DeBrincat and Dubois, there is nothing to be gained by having him sign an extension first and then be traded. Florida and Columbus did sign and trades for the 8th year of term, since Matthews would hypothetically be getting moved prior to the TDL here the receiving team can sign him to an 8 year deal after a trade

You must be new to Hockey I take it. Last I checked Karlsson had 2 Norris wins and was a Norris finalist 2 other times before he was traded. He was absolutely a franchise player, only a bit worse than what Makar is now

My bad but I thought you were referring to current Karlsson - he’s on everyone’s trade board. He was a great player (I agree - very close to maker level) but he had also suffered a serious injury and was clearly not the same player. Matthew’s is younger, better (albeit not by much) & healthy 🤞. But he’s not getting moved so ..

No arguments here. It's very unlikely he gets traded unless he won't re-sign I expect an extension will be done by at latest mid September

That is very awful for LA! I'm starting to think this is a troll post. If Toronto asks for that and Blake doesn't immediately hang up and block the number than he should be fired!
