If I'm GM, Avs would do that assuming they can't re-sign Toews at a reasonable rate and term and they aren't going after someone else like PLD they could slide in at 2C and work behind Mac for the next 8 years. Of course, the actual Avs are probably going to be stubborn and walk Toews right to UFA but, hey, I can dream.

at least its a rental-for-rental for the Avs trade. however, I anticipate that they'd prefer to keep Toews or only trade him for a 2C which is the actual need the Avs have. They can actually afford Toews for an extension too.

They need wingers too with Landy out for whole season again

You don’t trade top pairing dmen for wingers. Landy missed the whole season last year and they won the division so that isn’t a reason to do the trade. They would literally be better off signing a winger in FA and keeping Toews.
