Taking a Step Back

Created by: Goorts
Team: 2023-24 Nashville Predators
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2023
Published: Jun. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Maybe Trotz's ties with Islanders can net Dobson. Don't think he is worth a 1st, but Barrie and a 2nd and 3rd I believe should be more than enough.

---- Due to comments ... editted Dobson to be Romanov instead ----

---- Due to comments -- removed trade with Islanders completely ----

---- Created Poll to see which young LD could be a fit ----

I've seen A LOT of ACGM for Leaf teams where they buy McDonagh with retention. My thoughts are 50% retention warrants a 1st rounder, Robertson is also a potential rebound player who could fit the new offensive push Trotz wants this team to have.

Dobson isn’t available, and if he was then the isles would probably want a Seth Jones level return for him.

Maybe drop Robertson and the pick from the McDonagh proposal? I think Robertson is worth more than a 4th to TOR, and less than that to NSH.

So, Dobson for Johansen? Done.

That Isles trade is horrendous. There's zero chance they would move Dobson for a trash package like that.

What if I replace Dobson with Romanov? Is he just as untouchable as Dobson?

Toronto isn't trading a first and their top forward prospect for McDonaugh. You got him last year for free, retention is not worth that. TBH if they want to move him they probably need to retain regardless. Can't see them being interested. Maybe if Johanssen at 50% is included as well? But even then I'm doubtful that those guys are needle-movers for the Leafs.

Couldn't resist. tears of joy

Yeah, that'd be a non-starter from NSH. Even the OP proposal for Dobson doesn't make sense for where the Preds are at competitevely right now.

Knies is the Leafs top forward prospect, not Robertson. As for the Leafs who are in CAP hell, 3yrs of retention is 100% worth that.

Trotz came out and saying taking a step back to get out of the mushy middle, and bring in more youth. Thats why I made this ACGM.

I wouldn't necessarily call Knies a prospect considering he'll be a top-6 forward next year.

Have you checked the amount of cap space the Leafs have? It's over 15 million before solving Matt Murray. And despite what fantasy you believe, NHL GM's don't strong-arm each other into anything, they do what works for both parties.

He’s Sorokin’s BFF, and that’s gonna make him a lot of money lol.

Fair, but the draft picks being used to acquire Dobson can also be used to be acquire youth. I'd rather go in that direction.

Ah... that makes sense. I think any deal with the Islanders at this point would be more trading bad contract for bad contract. Trade Barrie for Bailey or something like that.

My hope is that Dobson or Romanov are young enough to be still apart of the youth movement, while still being competitive. However, maybe the Islanders aren't the team to get this youth from.

The leafs also have like 7-8 roster spots to fill with the amount of UFAs they have. Not to mention the idea of signing Matthews to his long term deal. I'm not saying Trotz is trying to strong arm Treliving.. I'm just being real that 3 yrs of 50% retention is worth a lot. Maybe not a low 1st rounder, but definitely higher than anything else I leafs have picks wise.

Islanders gave up 13th overall about 1 year ago for Romanov and a 4th. Unless theyve completely soured on him i dont think theyll trade him.

Im not sure about how Leafs fans view Robertson outside of they apparently view him in much higher regard than i do. Sure he is a bounce back candidate but he is also smallish and has had injury issues already. They still like him for his high potential but id be unwilling to pay much. McD at half price for a very late 1st is probably fair enough

If the return is Barrie and a couple of mid round picks, then yes, he's untouchable,

Romanov is probably more untouchable than Dobson if we're being honest.

I am convinced that Dobson and Romanov are not obtainable, at least without paying through the nose for it.

So I started the poll... I feel like Nashville needs to get a younger (23-24yr old) LD to go along with Fabbro & Carrier.

Who would everyone here think is a logical target? Ferraro? Duzri? Valimaki? Moser?

Let me know!

I don't think that's even remotely accurate. Dobson has way more potential than Romanov.

Two 23-year old defensemen are apples and oranges? Honeycrisp and Granny Smith at most.
