It's called a sign and trade. The devils did it with severson

The Devils did it with Severson, and got a 3rd. He's a top pairing defenseman being paid $6m/yr. As far as I can tell, Connor Clifton is a bottom pairing defenseman playing less than 15 minutes a night, literally a dime a dozen in the NHL. And you think the Bruins can take this pending UFA, sign him and trade him to a team in exchange for an arguably higher quality player (who plays the exact same postion) on an extremely team friendly contract for the next 3 years? Why would the Sharks do this?

This would also require Clifton to agree to a deal specifically with San Jose in order to execute a sign and trade - which in my mind is unlikely for both San Jose and Clifton.

first trade is awful for the Bruins. LA cant take on that much cap so they decline regardless of what they give up
