That’s 8OA in one of the best drafts in recent memory

yeah, the trade is painful enough that it's probably close to fair
depends if you can ship out karlsson for more reasonable retention and those other pieces for something decent that is less painful. I'd probably prefer a group of lesser prospects and picks compared to putting all the chips into the 8OA, which SJ could mess up.
Benning and Sturm both have good value... you can tell by all the ACGMs trying to get them from SJ.
be nice to know what the market for karlsson is right now. 2-3 teams or... absolutely nothing?

Sharks get rid of Karlsson get a #8 pick. The $4mil retention is meaningless as they won’t compete until 2026-27 anyway.

Might as well get something now for Karlsson because his value is at an all time high. EK65 also has a NMC so you need to deal him somewhere he wants to go.

I think Washington is one of the only places that would roll the dice on EK staying healthy.

For Pens and Isles fans: the cost for $5mil in cap relief is a 1st.

Isles might not want to pay it by they probably have to if they want to try and win now. And the money they take back is a useful player and not just cap space.

Washington is absolutely not going to do this at Karlsson’s age. There is no chance the Capitals trade an 8th Overall Pick in This Draft for Erik Karlsson. That’s a NO.

Did you forget the Caps already have their own high-end offensive defenseman, who's coincidentally also named Carlson? They've got no need for EK, certainly not at the cost of the 8th OA pick when they've got much bigger needs and limited resources to meet them.

Also, since I've decided to make this my white whale, Jensen and TVR were both signed to extensions a couple months ago, and teams don't extend guys and then trade them before the extensions kick in.

We have John Carlson, Nick Jensen, and Trevor Van Riemsdyk locked up on right defense for at least 3 years each. And MacLellan said his goal this offseason is to get younger and bolster the top 6. The Caps are very not the team to make an Erik Karlsson trade lmao
