Dynamite drop-in, Monty. This would be such a more enjoyable platform if people actually came to have discussions, instead of simply judging you. We won't all see the world the same, and none of us will always be right. Crapping on someone's work, which took them real time, without any context by simply saying "This team sucks", well, why? Show me why. Because if the core is the same core, then it probably doesn't suck, as so many of these players are interchangeable.
Anyway, I'm going to do two Pit teams, this being the first. The idea here is to go the road less travelled.
Earlier this week, Edm GM Ken Holland said he's in no rush to sign Bouchard, and gave the impression that he's looking to do a 1-year deal. That makes Bouchard the perfect target for an offer sheet.
If you think it's not enough money, than to me you've over-rating Bouchard based on The Ekholm Effect. If you think it's too much money, think of it this way:
Bouchard today is likely worth $6M, and based on current D salaries, one could see him peaking at $9M in a few years. So, at $7.5Mx6 years, if you view it as
Year 1: $6M
Year 2: $6M
Year 3: $7.5M
Year 4: $7.5M
Year 5: $9M
Year 6: $9M
This balances out to $7.5M x 6 years. You're buying a bit of his UFA time, and you're overpaying him now to do so, which is always the trade. It's also an offer sheet that Edmonton likely cannot match without gutting the team some. Pit isn't here to help start the McDavid Dynasty, they're holding on to their own. This is the type of player that Dubas loves, and he's an RHD who can be mentored by, and in time replace, Letang. If you have followed Dubas, this player makes sense, and this is the only way they'd get him.
As an aside, so many things that Hextall did as GM block any sort of attempts at creativity here. His lack of foresight and creativity is wild when looking at it through this prism.
Rutta has his Cup rings, Florida is all banged up and need affordable players. Neither side has leverage.
Petry to Detroit works for a few reasons. One, Detroit is way under the cap right now, actually under the cap floor. Second, he only has two years left on his deal, and Detroit has no major signings that his salary would affect. Third, Detroit has a lot of top young D coming up that Petry could mentor. Fourth, they need more offense from their D, and he can still bring that.
I don't think Detroit has interest in adding Petry at his dollar amount. I think at a cheaper dollar figure or with some heavy compensation then there might be a greater interest in him.
I dunno, isn't it better to spend 7.5m on a UFA rather than give up four picks for Bouchard. Gee a 4.3m over sheet might get you Swayman and it only costs a second.
