Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Lauzon, Jérémy
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (NSH)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Toronto gets a thumpy defensive type to soak up PK minutes and make things a little harder on the opposition plus a pair of staggered 2nds for the top layer of their pipeline and two others that can play immediately.
NSH
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Hollowell, Mac
  3. Král, Filip
  4. Robertson, Nicholas
Additional Details:
Nashville gets an injection of youth who can all play now. Kral steps in on the third pairing Lauzon and likely is readsy for second pairing minutes at about the time McDonagh is off the books. Hollowell is a Tyson Barrie clone but on a much smaller ticket. Both Robertson and Abruzzese will be middle six forwards when they are in their prime. Given that Lauzon was acquired for a 2nd the return is fair.
2.
TOR
  1. Buchinger, Michael
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Toronto finishes with their blueline re-furbishment by moving on from Brodie though some of his ticket remains for the year. In return they re-stock an organizational weakness at LHD and grab an additional 2nd in 2024
STL
  1. Brodie, TJ ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
The Blues get a half price Brodie who plays both sides and is a PK vacuum to add to a unit that struggled last season. They give up a prospect who is two years away and a 2nd to get it done.
3.
TOR
  1. Pettersson, Elias
  2. 2025 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Toronto frees up a little more cap space and a roster spot, picks up a LHD prospect that is likely two years away and trades into the 1st round in 2025.
VAN
  1. Järnkrok, Calle
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Vancouver grabs a 200 foot plug and play forward who compliments talent well and is a near neighbour of a certain RFA to be in Sweden and Nashville's 2nd in 2024
4.
TOR
  1. Martinez, Alec ($1,250,000 retained)
  2. 2025 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Toronto moves on from Murray and gain size, defense, and Stanley Cup experience on the blueline in Martinez with a move to help re-furbish the defense. As the 35 year old's contract is up in a year this plays much like Giordano would have had the latter not aged so quickly last season.
VGK
  1. Murray, Matt
  2. Steeves, Alex
Additional Details:
Vegas gets out from under Martinez's salary and can buy out Murray. This does two things for them. It clears a path for Lukas Cormier, but more importantly it also clears the cap space needed to re-sign Adin Hill and possibly (depending on number) Ivan Barbashev. They also get a young bottom six guy in Steeves.

Pretty sure Leafs aren’t (& shouldn’t) trade Brodie but really sure they won’t trade him with retention.

Hard pass from the Canucks. Last thing they need is another middle 6 winger. Dpety is also a promising prospect that alone wouldn’t make that trade work.

It's not really ideal that Nash moves two seconds and our 3LHD for a bunch of AHL players.

Canucks aren’t giving up a 1st for Jarnkrok. If he can play 3C I’d give a mid round pick for him, but definitely not a 1st

The retention in this case is not the problem, if players would take this discounts. But Acciari is not resigning for 1.4. Samsonov will ask for more as well.

A cheap but still uncertain LW side even with the possible good fit in the return of Brown.

If Willy is going to stay, he will not take a 3rd line role.

Robertson's still young enough that someone might take a chance on him for a 3rd or something (not suggesting that NSH is that team).

The rest are at the point where they'll probably just get swapped around for other minor leaguers/fringe NHLers that are also too old to be considered prospects anymore. in a change of scenery type trade. From NSH, that would be guys like Asplund, Huntington, Kondelik, Mutter.

None of those players you're packaging here are worth 2nd round picks or roster players though.

The reason you make a deal like this if you are Vancouver is because it gives you a forward that is cheap by comparison that you can plug into either Garland's or Boeser's slot when you move on from them. You will need players and Jarnkrok is exactly what is spelled out there. He is responsible all over the ice and he can compliment talent when he plays with talent. He won't drive your line but neither Garland or Boeser do that to any great extent either. Plus there is that added Pettrersen bonus. Does Pettersen sign *because* Jarnkrok is there? Hell no. There has to obviously be more to it than that. But it certainly does not hurt. Similarly, you do not make this deal solely for that reason. But you are not. The Pettersen thing is the cherry on top here.

According to Pronman, The other EP is your third ranked LHD prospect behind Truscott and Jurmo. Your prospect pool is ranked 28th out of 32 by him. How promising can he be?

As I have mentioned previously, unless you have taken the time to view say 10 to 20 games of these players, you cannot speak to what they can or cannot do with any authority. There are other players lower down in the pecking order I could have packed in here. I did not. The reason I did not is because I *have* watched these players extensively and I know what they offer and I know what those other players I could have put in but didn't offer. All three of Robertson, Abruzzese, and Kral are expected to play for the Leafs this season and the Leafs are as deep as hell. Which means they'll play for Nashville who simply are not. As for Hollowell, he's a guy who will not play for Toronto because although he is ready now and already has played pro games, the Leafs have two they like better in Niemela and Villeneuve. But given what Barrie is and what Hollowell is, he'll certainly play for the Preds because they are virtually the same player only one costs a fraction of the other and is considerably younger.

You get Brodie so you *can* move on from other Dmen without downgrading defensively.

Well, explain to me how you even sign Hill, Howden, Blueger, and Barbashev then? Again the deal opens up cap space and gives Cormier his runway. Not sure what isn't clear about that. Martinez is 35 years old and in the last year of his deal. What do you think is going to happen in September with him? Do you think he is playing 1st pairing minutes ahead of McNabb and Hague?

We do it by moving on Martinez without retaining on him and then taking on a contract that has to then be moved or bought out. Way too much extra dressing

Accairi just came off of a 1.2 deal before that he was close to or at league minimum. And he wants to be in Toronto. I'm not seeing the steep incline here you seem to be indicating.

Samsonov can be qualified for 1.98 on a one year deal. You are asking for one extra one. 3 million feels like a suitable compromise for that.

Just in case, there is 3.4 mil in cap space, but I do not think they need it here.

I'm not buying the spoiled kid routine that people seem to want to smother the big three forwards in. They understand what is at stake. In a scenario like this when you have three balanced lines like that, you give your fourth line six minutes 5v5 in the first two periods and divide the rest of the 5v5 icetime equally between the other three. The you go with the hot hand in the third. They get the icetime they earn.

I'm just as happy to do Martinez for Steeves straight up and buy Murray out at this end. I doubt you get more than that because Steeves will play in the NHL for a number of years and Martinez won't be for much longer..

Every other team I've built has Toronto buying Murray out. I just thought I'd try something different this time.

No likely it is not if you want a King's ransom for them. You need to make your peace with the fact that you are not going to get a King's ransom for any of those guys. There is either going to be retention involved or you will be selling at a discount.

Don’t have to do anything. They value Parayko and Faulk greatly so if someone wants them - they’d have to pay up. They don’t value Krug or Leddy so if someone wants them, they can have them. Pretty simple actually…

That's homerism. No one wants Krug or Leddy. And no one is going to butter your bread on the other two to get out from under their deals. It has not happened in any other case, why should St. Louis be any different?

The Blues don’t need to get out of their deals with Parayko and Faulk. They are perfectly happy with them so just walk on and sell your old dman to someone else then…
