Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Pesce, Brett
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Carolina has been rumored to consider moving Pesce if there is no progress on extension talks. The Leafs could be a team that becomes interested in the blueliner.

Liljgren would give Carolina an option on the right side to replace Pesce. He obviously is not as good, but he is younger and an RFA when his contract expires and should not cost too much to resign.
CAR
  1. Liljegren, Timothy
  2. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The Leafs get the defensive guy they need to play beside Rielly.
2.
TOR
  1. Olofsson, Victor
Additional Details:
Buffalo has been rumored to be trading Olofsson. Perhaps they are confident they can sign Kane this offseason. I think they should add some veteran presence to the blueline, and Brodie definitely fits that bill. If you pair him up with Power that could be a very strong pairing, especially defensively.
BUF
  1. Brodie, TJ
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Leafs add some scoring in Olofsson, who is also a PP specialist which they could use on their 2nd PP unit. He also won't cost as much to re-sign unlike some of their more expensive guys, and is still in his prime.

Who do you think adds? I was assuming the Leafs would ad but do you guys think a 1 for 1 trade fair? Curious to see what you guys think of Olofsson's value because he is a great goal scorer but I am lead to believe he doesn't do much else. Cap also works out well with only $250k being the difference.
3.
TOR
  1. Dubé, Dillon
  2. Lindholm, Elias
Additional Details:
I think, being born in Calgary, there is a good chance Nylander considers re-signing.

In terms of value, I think Nylander > Lindholm. However, Dube > Robertson and Abruzzese, and is the more proven player, so I think it evens out.

Canes pass. Just not enough there although I think Lil is solid. Imagine if Canes end up moving pesce there would be sizable interest and they can get more. Also don’t think Pesce makes sense for Leafs bc I doubt he’d extend there and they’d have to give up too much for a rental.

What else do you think the Leafs would need to add? Maybe Hirvonen?

I don’t think this deal works and adding to it doesn’t help even if you get close on value. Canes would likely be looking for a player for player impact trade to improve their top 6 (e.g. think Nylander if we’re talking Leafs, Cat or Keller as examples for other teams). Wouldn’t be 1 for 1 but those would be main pieces. Or dealing Pesce for a ‘23 first and a top prospect that can then be flipped for top 6 help. Would assume that extensions are included in the deals.

For us to take Lilj and futures, we would need to find a third team to take those for a roster forward / top 4 defender

Not sure Brodie is who the Sabres go for, but is seems like reasonable value

I don't think the Leafs should make any of these trades.

Pesce is still a solid top-4 defenceman, no doubt. However, he's consistently gotten worse the past couple seasons. And whether that's due to age, injury, or even a fluke, he's due for a massive extension that will take him into his mid-to-late 30s. On top of that, we would have to give up substantial assets to acquire him. It just isn't very efficient or wise. In this specific trade, you're giving away a guy in Lilly that is just entering his prime and projects to be a solid two-way top-4 d. His cap hit at 1.4 million this season will arguably make him just as valuable as Pesce would be to the team this season. Beyond that, Lilly will also be extended to a much more reasonable price and also for his best years as a player (as opposed to Pesce's worst years).

Any Leafs ACGM that moves TJ Brodie is simply laughable at this point. I simply cannot wrap my head around it. He's literally been our BEST defenceman the past 3 years. No debate. And I keep seeing him traded for scraps, it's crazy. Olofsson isn't the type of forward we need, not at that cap hit and not at the cost of our best defenceman. As a player Olofsson is fine, but he isn't much of a play driver. His underlings aren't very good and his defensive play is quite atrocious. He has a terrific shot, and that's pretty much it. He doesn't impact the game in any other way.

The last trade is the only one I'd potentially consider, but I'm certain CGY would reject. Trading Lindholm would create a massive hole. The only Nylander to CGY trade that might make sense for both teams is one where Hanifin and Mangiapane are the ones sent back.

Buffalo does not need LHD a left hand defenseman, but it would be foolish if they rejected this trade.
