Description
Thoughts on this trade:
Canes are desperately looking for scoring help and with Patches likely out for most of the season again, they need to add some. Talks have for whatever reason not been great between Pesce and the Canes. The thought is the deal is focused around these two. Nylander for Pesce is a close value but Nylander holds a higher value. Canes would also like some extra cap room, so they send Turbo over to help the cost. He had a down year and has one year remaining on his deal. In order to make the deal a better balance, Leafs send over Timmins, who has a cheap deal for two years, to replace the RHD in Pesce. Picks are swamped to make things fair.

Leafs are desperately looking for a change for playoffs. I can already hear the Leaf fans, why are we trading our best playoff performer?! Simple, he can't be our best playoff performer. No disrespect to Nylander, who I love, He should be the 3rd or even 4th best player on the team. In the playoffs, Matthews and Marner have one more chance to prove they can win when it matters. And not having Nylander to rely on shows the Leafs what changes they might need to do long term. If they can't perform, maybe it is time to move on from another of the core 4. This deal not only makes the Leafs significantly better on defence, but you don't lose a major chuck on offence. Turbo should rebound to a 50-60 point player and Knies will play the whole time meaning the Leafs don't lose a lot. To sum up, you get much better on D, a little worse on O, and you put all the pressure on Matthews and Marner to perform which you need from 11 million dollar players.

You said "Simple, he can't be our best playoff performer. No disrespect to Nylander, who I love, He should be the 3rd or even 4th best player on the team."

Why are you putting a cap on his development lol? I know you mean Matthews and Marner need to be better but that doesn't me he doesn't either.

Seems like Bunting will want a bigger contract than that, no? Also how will there be enough room to sign Pesce and Teuvo if that is the plan?

Bunting is getting minimum 5M in FA

Trading Nylander will only make us worse in the playoffs, I don't think trading Nylander suddenly make 34 and 16 perform better.

Leafs downfall in the previous playoffs has been lack of scoring at critical time. Not saying the Canes should do the trade proposed but don't think it makes the Leafs better either.

I agree 100% that Matthews & Marner both need to play better. Mitch gets all the heat but both were very disappointing vs Panthers. But disagree, Willy’s value is much higher than Pesce’s; and Terevainen is an overpaid pending FA (Canes would love to move him), while Timmins is just unproven. I’d only do this deal if you lose Terevainen and Canes add 1st or top level prospect. We could try to flip pucks / prospects for someone to replace Willy (Keller as an example)

I don’t dislike the general structure of the trade around pesce and nylander but your logic in description of canes section isn’t accurate.

Talks have been going as expected and they’re still working towards a likely extension. Only thing that was reported was Lebrun saying if they can’t extend pesce they’d look to move him this summer, but nothing has been reported that it’s trending in that direction yet.

Canes also don’t need any cap space cleared, they’re extremely flexible this year and going forward. I’m not opposed to moving turbo but it’s not a sell low, throw in move just to clear cap space. So if he doesn’t have much value in this deal which he doesn’t seem to, canes just keep him.
