Description
Just curious -- do knowledgeable Toronto fans think that Max Domi and Noah Hanifin would be good fits for the Maple Leafs? Domi is a free agent but might cost more; Hanifin is a rental and Toronto is giving up #28 overall and two good prospects for one season of him.

Hanifin precludes re-signing Ryan O'Reilly because I think ROR is going to get $5 million or more.

An option from this roster is to keep Murray and trade Samsonov for a good pick in the 2023 draft.

I didn't bother re-signing RFA prospects whom I don't expect to be on the main roster.

This is clearly a "win-now" approach because the prospect pool is shallow and there isn't much draft capital. Personally, I think that the Boston first is far more valuable than the Toronto 2024 first, but I doubt that Calgary would be willing to take the latter for Hanifin.

I'm going with an 8-defenseman framework because I think that's prudent in light of the veteran injury risk, particularly Brodie, Giordano and Schenn.

I think that’s a big overpay for Hanifin especially if it’s without an extension. I also don’t think Domi is a great fit but that would be a good contract.

Not all all to the Leafs. Niemela is projected to be a long term RHD. Minten is the Leafs only centre prospect. and you want include a first.
Just sign a good UFA for 4.95m.

I'm sure Hanifin would be fine, that price is a hard no for me though, especially as a rental.

I could take or leave Domi at that number.

Too high a price to acquire Hanifin but he’d be a good fit. I‘m biased and may be wrong but I think the Leafs could extend him (he’s American but Toronto & the Leafs are still a location of choice for most guys). I also like Domi at <$4M, but wonder if he’ll get more. Strangely enough, Leafs need offense and Domi - while may have issues in his own end - produces points

Strictly based on fit, Hanifin has pretty much been the dream player I want us to acquire. Everything about him is perfect for what we need and what we will need. I’m confident we could workout an extension if we acquired him. Having said that, I’d be pretty reluctant to give up minten. He’s pretty much our only centre prospect. That’s not to say a deal can’t be done. IMO there’s other prospects in our system that hold equal value to other teams across the league that we could include instead (Voit, Grebyonkin, etc.).

I was pretty high on Domi a month ago. But realistically he’s going to cost much more and the more I thought about it, the less I wanted him. Theoretically, he would work really well as our 2C, between Tavares and Marner/Nylander. But I think the contract will look really bad and he’s just too much of a liability defensively. A lot of people peg Domi as a winger for this reason, but history shows that he actually excels the most offensively when he plays centre, which is why he’s such a risky player.

Someone is going to overpay Domi. I’d also rather not use those assets for Hanafin who we really don’t need.

Thanks for the input, guys! I appreciate it.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with everyone that Domi is a bad idea for the Maple Leafs. Have a great weekend!
