Sure why not. (This is only if we acquire a center first) then we would need to clear some money so this trade makes sense.
I don’t see roslovic holding much value at his full cap hit and peeke for an early second is pretty good.

Why would Arizona pay for matthews a year before he's a ufa?

He does look like Ron Jeremy, he might want to chase College girls at ASU that has the best looking girls of every school, from what I've heard.
Not saying it will, but what it would take if he did want to go back home
I do think he stays in Toronto

Might be delusional but wont the Maple Leafs require a more NHL caliber player back? Remove the 3rds and 2nds and put in Schmaltz instead. Maybe keep the conditional 1st/2nd though. Roslovic is overrated and won’t give you anything you need in all fairness so you’ll be better off without him in the Colombus trade

They are bleeding, need to sell tickets and generate buzz in the area, better to do it now than wait and hope he comes next year
This deal assumes he would sign long term
I think he stays in Toronto though

What is the value of not only a top 5 center, top 10 player but, also a star that grew up in the area

All the picks, allow them to go get players like Lindholm from Calgary and maybe also Parayko from St-Louis and keep Cooley to sign after the college season.
That would be better than Schmaltz

Sell the 3000 tickets? If matthews is willing to sign an extension in AZ that means he wants to be there. It'd be a pretty stupid move by himself and Arizona to give up a ridiculous amount of assets for him just to get him a year earlier. Adding matthews this offseason doesn't make them contenders or even a wildcard team. Save the assets and sign him as a ufa if that's what he wants.

Its a reasonable trade. The impact of Matthews would be felt beyond the ice as well as adding a franchise talent would also make it easier to attract fans and get an arena quicker. This would also turn AZ into a destination for UFA’s potentially making them a power house in a couple of years with Geekie, Guenther and Keller and then offloading their heaps of other picks for more legit stars from Calgary and San Jose.

That said, Toronto would be totally foolish to trade Matthews.

Why wait, reports suggest Cooley might not want to play in Arizona, picks are nice but, they rarely become players like him.
This is only a hypothetical but, if I was Arizona and I heard Matthews wanted to sign an 8yr deal, I'd go get him right away
He's not just a good player, he's a genuine superstar and top 10 player

I agree, if I'm Toronto I don't trade him

Arizona is a sinking ship, they have no arena deal, they have no arena, they have zero prospects of an arena.

Sorry mate, Arizona Coyote’s are going to be the Houston Aero’s in two years.

I do think your scenario is much more likely
This is just a hypothetical
If you are going to get an Arena deal in Arizona, you'd need a Star like Matthews to get it done

Hey! I’m one of the few who actually believes Matthews wants to go home.

I'm sure he loves it in Arizona, just maybe not to play hockey, it would be a crazy bold move!

That's your take away? We all should know by now that it's just never happening. Matthews is resigning in TO and if he wasn't, Arizona isn't where he's going, the team is gone after this season.

I'd say the odds of matthews resigning in Toronto are 50/50 at best but I agree that there's basically zero chance he'd go the fake team in Arizona.

Can you provide an example of anyone giving up that much draft capital plus a recent 1st round pick for one player?

Ive tried, the best example I could find was Karlsson to San Jose. Arguably they best d man at the time of the trade, returned one first (3OA- Stutzle), recent 1st round pick Josh Norris, and two seconds and pieces to make the cap work.

Different player, position and era.. But that much draft capital in your proposed trade is rare.

Don't forget Karlsson wanted out because of the Hoffman stuff and how Ottawa handled it, so Ottawa wasn't really negotiating from a position of strength
Also Matthews coming off 40 goals and an MVP the year before
I have no example because, I can't remember the last time a player like Matthews was ever moved or potentially available
Lindros got 2 1st rounders, Forberg and Hextall, other players +15mil, which now would be 28mil now and Lindros never played a game yet

Every report says he wants to stay and they are working on a max extension. I would say with all the reports out there, it's a 50/50 he signs 8 years and the other 50 is he signs for 5. He's staying a leaf.
