I don't see this making much sense for Columbus. They already have Laine and Gaudreau. I agree they should get a forward upgrade but it should be a centre. Or a winger making less cap. 2 years of Marner and to pay all of that doesn't seem wise for Columbus to do based on where they are at in their building process.

Also this would mean TO giving up a bit and rebuilding. Marner won't move unless a fully developed and impactful player is included. None of this group meet that description.

Laine and Gaudreau are both better of on LW and they have their future top6 centers (Johnson and Carlsson/Fantilli) so I dont really see the point on getting a center + atm there isnt really centers that would fit in CBJ on the market

Yes it is. Take a look at recent stanley cup winners defense and tell me with a straight face that Toronto’s defense is as good. They aint gonna win a cup with that defense period

Marner is the 9th-highest paid player in the league going into next year, the Leafs can still trade for a developed, impactful player and get more cap space if they just...don't trade for any of the 6 players ahead of him that aren't on his team already.

There's plenty of other issues that would keep this from happening from Columbus' side, though. There's no way CBJ move Marchenko and Sillinger for a goalie (even to move Elvis), so Marchenko is locked in as a top-6 RW. Laine could play center, but regardless I don't think him playing RW is so offensive that Columbus makes a move like this to get a different one. Johnson can play center, but he's probably better suited for the wing (which doesn't help the LW logjam).

They were lucky to get past the 1st round and they wouldnt have stood a chance against canes. Depth and defense is still an issue and thats because they are spending 33mil on 3players that can be shutdown in the playoffs
