What IS His Plan

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 6, 2023
Published: Jul. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's assume that Brad Treliving persuades Ilya Samsonov to accept what I consider to be below-market money on his next contract. I still don't understand where he's going with the signings of Klingberg and Domi. Domi will probably turn out well, but without Klingberg, Toronto would have no cap concerns at all and $1.9 million to spend on that #3 RhD slot. Perhaps his plan is to trade T. J. Brodie? Or not buy out Murray at all, trading him at a loss and then divesting the Maple Leafs of Jarnkrok? I find it hard to come up with any other realistic scenarios. (I don't really believe that he's thinking of trading William Nylander, no matter what Paul Bissonnette says.)

I'm sure that Treliving has something in mind because there are subtle indications that he's smarter than I am and that he knows more about hockey than I do. I can't wait to see (1) what he does about Matt Murray, (2) what he does about Ilya Samsonov, and (3) what he does about the $2.2 million cap overage.

Murray and Muzzin go to LTIR thats what im feeling is gonna happen

Muzzin for neck and Murray for a nagging undisclosed injury

Timmins gets traded or sent down

That gives them enough cap to give Samsonov 3-3.4m

As lets be real if they wanted to move Murray why not do what they did last year (Mrazek + 1st for 2nd)

CHI wanted another 1st and Murray's buyout wouldnt have hurt them much. Seems like Mike Smith something's up

As much as I think it would be stupid to do so, they’re likely going to trade Brodie. Samsonov opting for arbitration opens another buyout window for Murray, so there’s an option as well if they have no takers via trade.

I am curious as to who’s going to play defence for this team though, as none of their recent additions are known for that. Treliving is also falling down the same rabbit hole the Penguins and Rangers found themselves in with Reaves. It’s an interesting scenario that is likely going to take a surprising turn one way or another.

It's been an odd off season for sure. Trading Willy is right out of the question, he's too good and all you'll end up doing is wishing you had him still because you aren't replacing his offence with anyone you are getting back in a trade. I don't think you are going to get a legit #1 back for him.

Murray will be dealt and I think it will be shocking when it doesn't cost the leafs an arm and a leg to do so. After that the roster is workable.

Personally I would move Brodie but only if it's for a strong defensive defenceman who is far more physical than Brodie. He's still a good player no question and would be a good partner for Klingberg but then you need a partner for Rielly.

The Domi signing doesn't make any sense to me, sure he adds some after the whistle stuff that helps in the playoffs but he's horrible defensively so he doesn't strike me as a Keefe player. Klingberg on the other hand I am fine with. He's tailor made for Keefe's puck possession system and I think will bounce back in a big way.

What happens next is going to be interesting, hopefully Murray gets moved and then Maybe Brodie gets moved to get a more physical defenceman to replace him. Then you see what you can do at the deadline. I really hope for a Muzzin type addition but that won't come until the deadline.

Move Murray and then see how the chips fall.

No point in risking Timmins when you can likely afford him right away after Muzzin goes on LTIR. Maybe send Knies down in a paper transaction along with Robertson (both are waiver exempt) and you are fine.

Yeah the Reaves signing is not good. But he does give them the toughest guy in the league so that's good.

Well he traded Matthew Tkachuk so I think we are all going to be surprised...I think you have to move Brody but with all the hate on Klingberg I would personally choose him over Brodie right now...I like Seth Jones brother Caleb he's a UFA probably cheap and I'm assuming a relative of Adam Foote or his son is Cal Foote also UFA, decent pkay for Tampa and won a cup and he is 6 foot 5

Don't expect knies to play on the Marlies I think at worst he'll get some seasoning on the third line if he's not keeping up but I doubt it, some opinions on this site just take with a grain of salt and nothing more.

Murray will not be moved or b/o until Samsonov signed. He still has many options to address the defense Klingberg fills a need, and I will expect him to be better around better players.

My wishful thinking is they're committed to 6 foot 5 cal Foote they have a deal in principle and just waiting to make room, just my thoughts.

Doubt they do that Knies is a full time NHLer and that doesnt get us space to keep everyone up. If we look rn Timmins has no spot and a 7th D at 1.1m in this cap situation is a waste vs 775k

Also he only can stay if Sammy makes 3mill if its anything higher he has to go down as we will be over even with the duo on LTIR.

Toughness is all fun and games until he’s being scratched in the playoffs like his stints in PIT and NYR, which is generally when you need said toughness the most.

Foote’s not exactly the defensive guy I had in mind, but I suppose the situation can’t get worse by taking a flyer on him in a sheltered role.

It would be just a paper transaction, you need to be under to start the season and that would include Muzzin. So you need to be under and Knies can be sent down until the LTIR clears. Then brought back up.

I think they will trade Murray and then run a 21-roster if we are looking at the cap alone. I wouldn’t be too surprised if he dealt Järnkrok for some cap flexibility but I think any other significant move (trading Brodie or Nylander) will have to do less with cap compliance than other things. If they trade Brodie, I could see them target Tanev or maybe even Dumba on a 1-year deal (like 3-3.5M). These swaps do have the benefit of bringing cap relief but yeah.

Cold water has been thrown on the idea, but they could buyout Brodie if they aren't able to find a trade in the next couple of weeks for him in the event that he's not being sent the other way in a Tanev trade or they sign Dumba.

Are you thick?

8M over the cap
Muzzin clears 5M
Murray clears 4.5M
Brodie clears 5M

That leaves you with 6.5M to sign Sammy and another D.

Try using your brain. Tired of your senseless posts.

So your answer is to trade Murray and Brodie.

And so well expressed, too -- up to your usual standard.

In an ideal world you also start the season with Muzzin on the roster and the two way guys in the minors to maximize cap space.

Yeah it's not a signing I would have done.
