The Leafs are over the cap by $8,831,450, Muzzin's hit is $5,625,000... so now let's do the math Einstein, you can use a calculator if you need to.

That means after Muzzin is on LTIR the Leafs are still over the cap by $3,206,450... that is with a 23-man roster and Samsonov not yet signed. For arguments sake, let's say Samsonov only gets $3 million in arbitration (he will get more), now you are over the ca by $6,206,450

-3rd round for that retention feels about right; I think this would just come down to how Calgary views those prospects. Timmins is just a 6th/7th D, Is Hirvonen gonna be a middle 6 guy or a guy who bounces between the AHL & NHL? Is Moldenhauer a poor man's Alex Kerfoot or a legit scoring threat? Personally, I'd just swap those two guys for Topi Niemela and then I think the deal gets done.

-CBJ probably asks for more. Brodie is 33 and in the last year of a $5M deal. Peeke is 25 and is just starting a 3x$2.75M. I think Peeke might be available, considering the logjam CBJ has with defense, but because of that same reason I think they'd view Brodie as a cap dump and not a player that becomes part of their core.

-Anaheim is gonna want more than a guy like Nick Robertson to eat the Murray deal. Robertson turned pro full-time in the 2020-21 season, and here are his combined AHL+NHL games played by year since then: 27 (20-21), 38 (21-22), 17 (22-23). Dude has literally played one full season's worth of games in 3 years. I don't think you're going to convince the Ducks to take Murray by including the only guy in the league that gets hurt more than him.

The whole reason why you're trading T. J. Brodie (and exchanging him for a 50%-retained Nikita Zadorov) is that his cap hit is too uncomfortable for Toronto to manage. Hence, he's a cap dump. Good players as well as bad ones can be cap dumps. Speaking of which, we aren't accepting less than the value of a second-round pick to take on the $6 million salaried Matt Murray, whom we can't buy out so we'd have to use up a roster slot on him, and Nick Robertson isn't close to a second-round pick value.
