Description
It looks like the Canes have gone in on the Karlsson sweepstakes with Deangelo being the plan B option if they lose out to the Pens on getting Karlsson. I think it's safe to say Pesce will get traded (likely to Nashville or Dallas) in a sign-and-trade where the Canes sign him to an 8yr deal then ship him out, as this is likely the hold up in a trade taking place right now, with the acquiring team and his agent negotiating a new deal. If the Canes do get Karlsson, it'll likely be with ~40% retention which is higher than SJS would probably like but this is their best chance to get out from that contract (not that he's a bad player, it's just more of a sell high on the asset). I think the Canes have more flexibility and more to offer than the Pens do as the Pens would need to dump salary in their return package where Carolina wouldn't so if the Canes truly want Karlsson, I'd think they're the clear front runner to land him. Also I don't think Tarasenko will be coming to NC, he's likely gone to OTT or DET.

I think if a 3-way happened here, NSH keeps their 1st (give up a 3rd maybe) but retain 1M on Karlsson or something like that.

That is a bit high for NSH. I would say NSH either does what @GMBL has mentioned here already or would want the 1st round pick conditional on making playoffs and the 2nd drops to a 3rd.

Personally I'd rather not tie up the last retention spot NSH has on Karlsson for another 4 years, and would rather use it on something like moving Barrie at the deadline for a higher pick, but I wouldn't be opposed to either.

On the Nashville side, I like the idea of Pesce, but I do not like the idea of giving up the 1st. Maybe conditional on making the playoffs, but yeah... seems a bit steep of price.
Definitely do not like the idea of Nashville using their last retention spot either. My hope is that it gets used on Barrie at the trade deadline.

Can't see Grier retaining more than 40% for EK65. Even so, there would have to be limited lottery protection (top-5/lottery protection rather than top 10-15).

4.2m is 36% of the contract. I think the upper limit would be 40% but likely they would only be retaining in the mid 30s.

I don't think DeAngelo is "Plan B" for Karlsson. However, I do agree that a target of around $4M of retention between SJ and a 3rd team is spot on. That would make the money work. Now the exact pieces and parts for all of that can be debated, but EK at about $7.5M is where I think it should land.

I don't think the Deangelo trade happens unless a Karlsson trade falls through as they both serve the same role on a team and bringing in both makes the defensive core worse defensively cause Chatty's probably pushed down the DC, so that's why I look at it as a Plan B.

Yeah I have to admit I'm really struggling with that one. I will sit patiently while we wait for "The Don" to finally iron all of this out. Waiting truly IS the hardest part.
